Heartworm Preventative I have been reading all of this stuff about heartworm preventatives and wondered why my vet has never said anything about it so, I did some research and found that heartworm is basically non-existent in Idaho. Would you still buy preventative? |
Yes it's recommended to use it year round in all 50 states by the American heartworm society. |
Not reported is not the same thing as non existent. I believe there is a possibility of heartworms in just about every state. We have had this come up when checking people out for adoptions. Personally, from what I have read, I would use a preventative. Heartworms can wreak havoc on a pup...I have seen that first hand and would never take that chance. |
There may be infected dogs/wildlife traveling into the state, that leave and may get treated or die and get reported in another state. |
I would still use it, it's just not worth the risk to me. If a small dog gets heart worms the treatment can kill them and if it doesn't it can leave them with issues like heart problems. |
Thank you for all the info. I guess I'll ask my vet about it the next time we go in. Which one is the best? |
We use heartgard. |

A member here lives in an area where heartworm is not considered a big threat, and her dog ended up with heartworm. Heartworm and the treatments are so horrible that I personally would not let my dogs go without the preventatives. We use Heartgard year round here. |
We use Sentinel which also offers protection from other types of worms and some flea protection. |
I use Heartgard. I also use Sentinel for two of my pups who won't eat the Heartgard. |
Personally, if your risk is low, I wouldn't. But I would definitely get your vets input. |
We use Heartgard Plus year round! I would rather have mine protected if in doubt. |
Do your research on what kind. Trifexis has been said to cause many dogs deaths. I have used it for over a year with no side effects, but have decided to take my dog off it. I figure why chance it if there are other alternatives. but yet, my vet is the one that prescribed trifexis. But I dont consider my vet a BAD vet or I wouldnt take my fur butts to him. So you really should do your own research. |
We use Revolution. |
