If you discontinue heartworm for the winter months, you need to test before you resume the medication. Even if they remain on it year round, it's important to test yearly.

You dont want to use insecticides on your dog. Ok I get that, but then why are you feeding your dog garlic? thats toxic to them...poison just the same. Just because its natural doesnt make it safe/

Also people keep in mind that there have been shortages of immeticide for a few years now. This is not a simple fix if a dog gets heartworm!

Just thought I'd clarify that large amounts of garlic in dogs per weight is toxic. Small amounts of garlic are not.
I did my research and consulted my vet first.

I will admit that it is an easy decision for me right now because we live in a HW high incidence area. However, knowing about HW, I would never risk it anywhere.

As Crystal pointed out, we probably do not have accurate data about incidence because it is under-reported and under-diagnosed.

This is incorrect. According to Vet Nutritionist and Diplomat of the American Veterinary Nutrition Council, Dr. Rebecca Remillard, DVM who also has a PhD in animal nutrition it is not safe in any form or any amount!

She has repeatedly posted on her site to avoid garlic although it is a AAFCO permitted food.

She has said: "onions and garlic contain an alkaloid disulfide compound that is toxic to red blood cell membranes and irreversibly denatures hemoglobin" and that "there is no known concentration of garlic proven not to cause a problem."

It's not worth it.

Thank you for posting this I was unsure about little amounts of garlic but this helps.

Well, people will believe what they want to. I just hope it doesnt turn out that their innocent dogs that depend on them end up paying for their mistakes.

Everybody has the right to decide if they want to prevent the disease or not. Sorry though, I don't understand why people don't give it. I will do what is in my power to prevent my dog being pumped full of arsenic. Honestly, in the grand scheme of things the risk of prevention isn't even something
i waste mental energy on. I choose the products that I gelieve are the safest and use them.

Eeek! When the subject of garlic has come up before, I thought I looked at my dogs' food ingredients and saw garlic listed and wasn't happy about it. I checked again this morning and do not see it. I wonder if it was removed? Either way, glad it is not in there.

For sure. I definitely agree with this. Whether you decide to use heart worm meds or not, you should test once a year. In fact, many who choose to go with out meds test twice a year. And for what is's worth, you can actually buy the tests online now too...

Sadly, that is what happens all too often. Again, I have to say that I wish all people who don't use preventatives or encourage others not to would listen to what happens to pups who are not protected. I really, really do not think they realize how serious this is.

They say they don't want to poison their pups...yet they don't stop to think about the poison that will be needed to get rid of the heartworms if they get them. Of course there are those who think they can cure heartworms other ways (not true) and, in the end, the pups suffer. It is a huge problem...I see it all of the time and not just in Texas.

Only a vet should do a test for Heartworm. Our vets send the blood to antech because snap tests have a higher false negative rate.
