| Vet thoughts on reaction to first puppy shots You may have read my prior post about Gracie responding badly to her first puppy shots. It was a rough day and I felt so bad for her. That was Jan 24. (She was pre-medicated with 1/2 cc Benadryl for these) We are coming up on our appt for our next round of shots. I could not bear for her to have such a hard time with it again. So, I left a message to have a conversation with the vet and "prepare" for a better way to handle it. Based on a detailed description of how Gracie acting following the shots (inconsolable, hyper, whining, wanted to be held but then didn't when she was picked up) Vet says she was most likely having pain, fever and discomfort. To this end the plan for the next round is to pre-medicate with 1/4 of a baby aspirin 2 hours before shots and then follow up every 4-6 hours with 1/4 baby aspirin through one dose the following morning. A close friend says her vet split each round into 2 shot sessions for her furry baby. Our vet says these could not be split. Clearly they were not using the same product (I guess). |

| What shots is your vet wanting to give? Some vets give to many unnecessary vaccinations.

| The vet can absolutely give fewer shots. By this I mean the vaccine he's giving can contain anywhere from one antigen, or up to 7. For example, this means if he's giving a 5way shot it's as if he gave your pup 5 shots but they are all in one poke. Dr. Dodds does not recommend combination shots, but you'll find most vets use them. This is what they where taught and this is what they continue to give even though more studies are showing this is not really safe for a pup.To do just the core vaccines, which would be for distemper and parvo, a he would most likely have to order it in for you. Intervet Progard makes one and I think or Nobivac DPV, but the vet will probably charge more for this. | How old is your puppy? How often is your vet giving her vaccinations? How large is your baby? Did the vaccinations contain Lepto vaccine? New vaccine protocols are stressing puppies do not need to receive 3-4 puppy shots in order to be protected....the reasoning behind the series of three shots is an attempt to hit that window when mommas immunity has stopped being passed to puppy and is no longer effective, so giving 3 injections every 3-4 weeks, will hit that window....but in fact, only ONE of these vaccines is needed to provide protection to prevent disease. This is an idea that most vets are not turned onto yet....rather safe than sorry mentality prevails.....which I can completely understand. And vaccines CAN be split or divided in half for small dogs...Rabies is apparently the only vaccine that State laws say can NOT be divided. I would not be giving Lepto vaccine unless it is prevalent in your part of the country....and I did change vets because the one I used would not give a vaccine that did not contain Lepto. |

| Cali is small - I only allowed the vet to give one vaccine at a time so if there was a problem I could easily target it. Okay so I had to pay for more office visits - I considered that to not be a problem based on all the stories I had heard. Cali is now 5 years old and other than rabies we titer only. BTW she has never had any problems with her vaccines.

Adverse reaction to shots, if they're going to happen, happens on the 2nd or 3rd round or 1 year booster & so on. If they're going to have adverse reactions, it doesn't get better but can get worse. So anti-inflammatory shot or benadryl b4 & staying @ the vet 30mins- an hr is recommended. I had 1 pup (Turbo's sister) have adverse reactions to her 2nd set of puppy shots. She was lethargic, tired, sleepy & her eyes, whole face including her tongue puffed up. Had to rush her to the ER. I thought she was just sleepy, she didn't paw @ her face or anything. Turbo had adverse reaction to his 1 year booster shot. As soon the vet tech brought him out, he was shaking his head & pawing @ his face. I told them that Turbo is having an allergic reaction & they said he's fine. We get in the car & he's rubbing himself silly all over the car seat. I called them while still in the parking lot & they told me to bring him back in...his face was starting to puff up & they finally believed me. To be safe, make sure she's only getting the core shots (DHPP), no other shots @ the same time (like bordetella). If given all together, it's hard to pin point what shot she had a negative reaction to. Do anti-inflammatory shot (this one is more expensive than benadryl- vet does this for Turbo bc he had a neg reaction) or benadryl shot b4 giving her the vaccines. Stay @ the vet's office 1/2 hr - an hr to be safe. Or stay near by so you can take her in right away if she has any adverse reaction. That would be itchiness, getting puffy, lethargy, vomiting...anything out of the ordinary, even seizures & anaphylactic shock. It's scary when it happens & it's not something to treat lightly...It is real & it's a serious problem. P.S. I've never heard of giving them baby asprin...what does this do?
