| Lymes Disease Vaccine, yes or no? Zoey had Lyme Disease last Christmas, and Leo had a deer tick in him, but luckily he didn't get Lyme Disease. My vet has really been on me about considering getting the vaccine for both of them. I'm also around a lot of wooded areas, and most trails are through the woods around here. I decided to make an appointment for both of them to get the vaccine on the 27th of this month...but now I'm having second thoughts; is it a good idea? Or not?

| I didn't know there was a vaccine for lymes. I live where there are tons of dear ticks and humans occasionally get lymes. I wonder if there is a human vaccine for it? Huey isn't outside enough for me to worry, but my last dog (lab mix, had for 13 years) would bring home ticks all the time and never had lymes. I would be cautious about getting a lymes vaccine for your dog, since it is fairly rare and additional vaccines can be so hard on the system.

| Nope, I don't do it and wouldn't. Lyme disease in the dog is an infection for which over 90% of infected dogs will never get sick and the 5% to 10% that do get sick can be easily treated with a safe inexpensive course of antibiotics. This situation would seem to indicate that vaccination is simply not worth the expense. There is also talk that kidney disease can occur in some individuals with long-term antigen exposure, in which case vaccination might be just as hazardous as actual infection. Oh FWIW, Jackson is very active, always outside, in the woods, in the farmfields, playing with other dogs, at dog parks, in pet stores, at the beach, etc, etc, and I still will not be vaccinating every year for it. He actually tested positive for Lymes three years ago, came up limping one day. It was treated with a quick round of doxycycline and he was back to normal the next day after meds.

| I did for three years but don't any more I heard it is hard on the liver. I started it a year the ticks where extremely bad but after that year they weren't as bad and she maybe got bit once or twice each year so I stopped. If we have another bad year and she starts getting bit a lot I would think about giving it again but there's no need right now.
