| How much exercise is too much? Hi everyone, My yorkie/maltese puppy, Gryffin, is 6 months old. He currently weighs just under 7lb. I recently started taking him on a evening walk each day. We go around the loop in my neighborhood. It is a little over 1&1/2 miles. He loves it and never seems tired when we get home. He is still always up for running around with our other dog as soon as we walk back into the house. In fact he still seems to have a ton of excess energy. I'm wondering if it would be too much for him to add an second walk in the early morning when it isn't too hot? I don't want to over exercise him, but I still feel like he still has so much extra energy. How often do you walk yorkie? Do you think two long walks a day would be too much for him? Thanks! |

| I don't think it is too much exercise. When Max was that age, I did the same. I need to get back to the morning walks to help relax my boys during the day. They get anxious waiting for their big evening outings.

| I don't think it's too much either. Georgie is 8 and gets a couple walks a day (a little over a mile) He loves his walks and does circles by the front door when we say the word walk.

| Bailey is a a little over a year. He never heard of too much exercise. Nightly we take long walks on the golf course and when other dogs join us they run around like crazy for quite a while chasing each other at high speed! When he gets tired..rarely...he just lays down in the grass...then he just walks home with me and he sleeps soundly when we go back inside. Not the usually dragging every toy into my lap to play. |

| My 5 month old Leila has a lot of energy too. She has the most energy right before we go to bed at night and first thing in the morning! I take her to work with me and she seems to sleep all day...It does take a lot to tire out these Yorkies for sure since I have 2 Chihuahuas who seem content after our evening walks which is about a little over a mile long. I dont think there is no such thing as too much exercise just as long as you bring fresh water with you....

| Walking is fine, but I would limit jumping or agility type exercises (any high impact stuff) until her growth plates are closed. This is different for each dog, but around 12 months, some sooner, some later. An x ray can show if the plates are closed or still open.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I say God Bless you for taking your YOrkie on nice long walks! I agree two walks a day of over one mile long is going to be just fine. I would introduce gradually though. Say every other day to see how your dog does with the increased exercise. Walking is a prime exercise for the all important strengthening of the postural muscles, and another poster suggested no agility like performance sports until after one year old, and I concur. But you can do some other things to build muscle and to have fun with your dog. Building the Canine Athlete is one great DVD by Dr Chris Zinc - and don't let the name dissuade you from purchasing this great exercise/trick/training tool. I don't want to write a bible, but if you would like more info just let me know.

| I agree that long walks are great. My 2 older ones could walk for hours. In addition to getting exercise, I think it really helps them keep their heads clear. They're much more well behaved when we go on regular walks. My little 6-month old puppy could take it or leave it. We'll walk about a block & a half and then she'll just sit down and won't budge to let me know she's done.

| I have a 5 year old yorkie and we walk at least 4 km a day. He has also done a 9.2km walk with me without any trouble He then came home and wanted to play. No end to his energy I think if you gradually build up their endurance they can do anything a larger dog can do and it seems like the smaller they are the more energy they have. |
