Not happy with my vet right now!

My vet sells Science in the office, too but never once have they pushed me to switch to it.

The choice of food is for your pet is personal. It comes down to finding the best quality food your dog will eat and tolerate. Because face it, if your dog won't eat it, it won't do any good. I tried the grain free way (TOTW) for awhile, but it was hard on Rhett's stomach. We are back on Blue Buffalo small breed.

Yep my vet recommended the Royal Canin Hypoallergenic food for Callie once to try when she was first having allergies (could not get my little picky girl to eat it) but after that one time in 4 years she has not mentioned the food at all again but thank God Callie had not needed a special food. The food is called prescription food because it is for special needs its not just for every dog. It is specially formulated like a prescription for a human but its a food.

I think a comparison of the two is an eye opener.

No disrespect taken, especially since I do not recall ever saying that I give Dog Food Advisor high marks. I first purchased Authority over 8 years ago and gave it to my senior chihuahua. I also purchased it BEFORE I knew there was such a thing as a dog food review website (there are many more now). Dog Food Advisor had no bearing on me purchasing it 8 years ago and still does not to this day. I continue to use it because, just by chance, JuneBug likes it. I mentioned DFA just as conversation as part of my post.

Not only would I feel bad, but I would feel stupid if I ignored my gut instincts and instead, listened to vets, etc. If it wasn't for me being informed about Natura products (Innova, EVO, California naturals, etc) I would have probably purchased it because of it's high nutritional values and fellow friends who swore by it (and not by a website review). Recall dates on Natura this year alone started on 3/18 then it was expanded on 3/29, then it was widened even more on 4/20. Now the newest and most recent on these products was on 6/18.

The recalls have proved that it's all a buch of crapola and that better, higher quality does not mean it is better OR safer!

My bad...I guess since you started the post out with remarks about that site I interpreted it in the wrong way? So, you don't use or value his information over that of a vet nutritionist?

I totally disagree with you about vets but you are like many who believe they are not who you should go to regarding animal nutrition. It is a shame that so many have such overall disrespect for these highly educated people who I simply could not do without. I shudder to think what shape my pups would be in if not for my vets. I am sorry that you have not found one that you feel you can respect.

It takes time Lady. My chihuahua saw a vet only twice in the 8 years I had her and lived to be around 21-22 yrs old. I lost her on May 29th of this year.

I just got JuneBug on June 22nd from a rescue and yes, it will take time to find a vet that I really like. As of now, I take him back to the clinic at the rescue which is state-of-the-art. It has to be with around 300 animals there. In fact, I am taking him there tomorrow for them to check out his incision from him being neutered. Since he was totally vetted at the clinic in April and is up to date on everything, I have some time to do some research and to get some references of vets in my area.

That's right about what shape pups would be in with out vets. I trust mine a lot and have taken Callie in for EVERYTHING lol seriously every little thing and every time she still treats me the same not like a paranoid dog owner and always takes the time to explain anything I have questions about to me and looks at anything I ask about. I have never been disappointed with her and I have no idea what I would do with out her. She always gets Callie in the same day if I call about something and when her tooth broke and I faster her and took her in on a Monday a day they don't normally do any surgery's they did Callie's extraction. I think every one should have a great vet like that. Vets are so very important just like a human doctor when you are sick or something is wrong but even more so with dogs because they can't say hey so and so is wrong.

I highly recommend that if JuneBug is a yorkie, you take him to a vet yearly. I hope you find a good one. Good luck.

I agree. And, as to that last comment, I think it was Will Rogers who said that vets have a more difficult job than human doctors because their patients cannot tell them what is wrong.

I can't imagine not having a regular vet that I trust and who knows my dogs. Changes in a dog's condition can be subtle and having a primary vet who follows your pup yearly for check ups and between for other things can make all the difference in how quickly something is picked up on. Plus, I like knowing if I have a concern I can pick up the phone and speak to them. They've been wonderful at helping me decide whether we need to come in or if a home treatment is in order first. We our vet.

The staff is important too. My Grandma pays for Sammy my moms rescue's vet expenses but my mom pays for his CT meds but my Grandma was able to put her credit card on file so if my mom ever has to take Sammy in for an emergency or can't pay for the meds they can use my grandma's card that is on file.
