Well, hopefully with the new vaccine protocols being looked at, lessening the frequency of vaccines from 3-5 years, or even the 1-3 years will help to prevent it.

Catching it early is important, I don't have the exact statistics.

Signs and Symptoms of Leptospirosis
 The severity of symptoms varies, and depends on the dog (age, immune response, vaccination status), the strain of Leptospira, and other factors. Some dogs may have mild symptoms or no symptoms at all, but severe cases can be fatal. Signs and symptoms may include:
fever
joint or muscle pain - this may manifest as a reluctance to move
decreased appetite
weakness
vomiting and diarrhea
discharge from nose and eyes
frequent urination - may be followed by lack of urination
yellowing of the gums, membranes around the eyes, and skin (jaundice)

That's what scars me about Lepto. I know I am very in tune with Callie and normally see and take care of things fast but it still scares me. I think Callie got hers its been almost a year so not 100% sure but more her back then the top of her back leg.

Yes it is scary, but it's an easier and more effective solution than chemo and radiation, as that can be pretty hard on a pet (and the owner) and not always successful. I think, too, many owners were just opting to euthanize, so I guess they think amputation is a better solution? IDK!

Well dogs do seem to adjust better then we think to having only three legs or even going blind but I would still be so upset having to amputate maybe even more so then Callie.

Oh yes, I agree! At least with a yorkie one could let their hair grow out and hide the fact that a leg is missing...

Through the back and forth on this forum about topics like this come lots of great nuggets and new ways of thinking. I am extremely grateful for the passion that exists on this site.

I totally agree with you. By quoting me earlier, I am just trying to understand where in that quote I mentioned "you cannot debate" or "disagree"? Thats what I love about freedom of speech...you can say what ya want and in a forum like this and wait for someone to throw a wrench in...to make something worse than it already is. Isn't that what you are doing right now? LOL! Get your story straight before pointing fingers please!

I didn't even think about that but I bet no one would even notice just by watching them that they only had three legs especially when the hair is long. I have watched some videos of three legged yorkies and they still run fast and move really great. It does have to be better then being with out your baby.

Wow, I can't believe people are giving you crap for this post! As a newbie to this forum, I can honestly say there is more arguing/negativity in this forum than any other I have visited recently. I do think it's because everyone here REALLY cares about their pets and they're passionate about what they believe in. But sometimes it can come across as a little "bitchy". I guess I grew up learning that there are more respectful ways to share your beliefs. :) I think it's the negativity that's a little disconcerting here, more so than the arguing. But I'm one to "kill with kindness", and not let anyone else's negativity bring me down. :D Not everyone is like this, and some even enjoy arguing, and that's ok too I guess. I'm just not used to it! haha

That being said, I really appreciate all the replies and good information! I don't think moms of puppies OR babies with ever agree on vaccines! All we can do is share as much information with each other as possible and try to make the best decisions we can. :)

I know, it's totally crazy. I'm a newbie to. I guess they have nothing else better to do.
