-Royal Canine for Yorkshire Terrier?-

I had to switch Busters food from Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier because he was itching a lot and I think it was from the corn. He stopped scratching as soon as I switched his food.

This is what Winston eats and has done well on it, I have no problems getting him to eat.

My breeder has been feeding the puppy formula of this so I bought a small bag. 2.5lbs and it was $19. I thought "Wow, Royal Canin must make better food than I thought, that is crazy expensive for such a small amount!". I got home and looked at the ingredients...

Chicken meal, corn gluten meal, rice flour, beet pulp, and wheat gluten meal are all things I don't consider to be in the category of High Quality Food. Why the high price? Because it's for Yorkies?

I know many people on YT love this food but even if it was dirt cheap it does not seem like something I'd want to feed long term.

No..because of the POSITIVE evidenced based SCIENTIFIC outcomes of the nutritional composition of the formulas. The formulas have been scientifically balanced and then monitored for results for 5-10 year trial periods. The quality management practiced by RC is unmatched in the industry.... If your dog does NOT have an allergy to grains or any of the ingredients in any of the RC formulas, this dog food is scientifically formulated to provide a balanced, nutritionally complete food for your dog, and your dog will do well on it.. ANY dog can have issues with ANY food ingredient, making that food not suitable for that particular dog. I am thinking that is a dog issue, not a dog food issue.

Since this is how my dogs get the majority of their nutrition, it's very important to me how the food is tested, smaller companies can't often afford to do the testing to make sure it's completely safe and has the nutrients it says it has. Joey has done well on it all his life and my little rehome was supposedly a very allergic dog who needed a special diet and all sorts of supplements to aid digestion. When his food had an ingredient change, I decided to try him on RC and low and behold he not only did well on it, he's thriving on it and doesn't have some of the problems he had before, such as teary eyes, flakey skin, and extreme indigestion. So, I'm a huge fan of it. It's a major plus for me that they LOVE it and act like they are eating the tastiest food in the world.

A leather shoe can be made nutritionally complete by adding vitamins but you wouldn't feed one to your dog. I was once sent a link that backed up the theory - I wish I'd saved it - very interesting reading!

I was just saying for the price, I did not expect to find multiple cheap fillers. Did not intend to stir up any controversy

That's why they do testing, to see if the dogs actually do well on the formula. What do you call fillers? Grains? Complex carbohydrate's have their place in nutrition. They are a good source of energy and some contain amino acids that are difficult to find elsewhere. Do you really think a potato is that much more nutritious than a rice? Dog food can't be 100% protein, they need other things besides protein, namely carbohydrates, and many times the carbohydrates is chosen for ease of digestibility. Also carbs will give a feeling of being full and this too is important, a dog needs to feel satiated after eating.

No controversy! People that swear by the scientific based outcomes and the inpeccable quality control of Royal Canin, will not be swayed....most of us have read all about the formulas and how they are nutritionally balanced and geared toward pet health and not what pet owners like to hear from catch words and phrases, and we obviously do not agree about the "dredded evil attributes of grains and fillers", realizing that these grains and fillers are actually nutritious and, processed correctly, are easily digested by dogs....and after 45 years of successfully producing nutritious formulas for pets, under the guidance of scientific trials and testing, continual input and active participation from vet nutritionists and vets, and with only one recall in one of the prescription formulas in all those years.....as far as I am concerned, it meets my requirements for my breeding program and provides more than adequate nutrition for my dogs, with no adverse effects over all the years I have used it. I like to think perhaps the effort to produce "scientifically balanced nurtition" in the food, keeps my dogs immune systems in tip top shape, and since they are on it from "cradle to grave", I like to think and some way is responsible for my dogs not being plagued with allergies and GI upsets. I carefully track these outcomes with contact with my owners over the years. That makes me very happy! If I was certain a leather shoe, supplemented with vitamines and minerals, would produce the indisputable healthy outcomes in my dogs that Royal Canin does, I would consider feeding it as part of a balanced nutritional feeding program! I would never eat it, but there again, Royal Canin is aimed at nurtitional requirements of pets not the owners!

Coming from a novice, as I am certainly no expert, I like that Winston willingly and eagerly eats his kibble...Royal Canine. That in itself is very important to me, I'm 100% sold. I feel he is getting the nutritional needs from the years of testing this company has done with their dog foods. Isn't your dogs health worth every penny you pay? Winston's is.

My 10 y.o dog was on Royal Canine Yorkie all of his life, until he started having health issues about 6 months ago. I definitely don't blame the dog food. If anything, it was all of the fatty people food I gave him that caused him to have digestive issues.

IMO, the introduction of all of this new dog food has made it more difficult for us pet owners to know what to feed our pet. There are so many different philosophies out there...Raw is best...Grain Free is best...don't feed food with this or that ingredient in it...etc etc. I've read so many different things that it makes my head spin...especially since I just want to do what's best for my furbabies.

I think if your dogs like to eat it and their little bodies can physically tolerate it well, you've won half the battle right there. There are so many things that my dogs won't eat or they can't handle eating...that it's really limited me to what I can feed.

You've said so many things that I think are so important. Honestly, there seems to be so much misinformation spread about nutrition. I would never buy from a company that sells "organic" pet food because there is NO such thing. Until there are definitions and rules about what makes a food "organic" it's just a buzz word. Human foods have definite definitions on what makes a food organic, but not pet foods. Holistic is another buzz word that drives me up the wall, there is no meaning to the word, and don't even get me started on the word "natural". Its doesn't mean "safe."

I love giving Cookie her Royal Canin 29 Yorkie puppy formula. She has lots of energy and her coat is shiny, soft, and beautiful (though it's not a bad headstart that she's from Deb Sillers' Amazing Yorkies bloodlines).

I fed Blue Buffalo the last few years, switching over from the Innova that some fosters had stool problems on. I'm not anti-grain, and I'm not cheap.
