| Vegetarian diet? My niece recently started her dog on a veggie diet. She is also a vegetarian. She emailed me a lot of articles that I have yet to read. Her fur baby is slender, has lots of energy, and according to her, in perfect health. I give Ian a lot of veggies for snacks, but a complete vegetable diet for dogs seems unhealthy to me. Again, I haven't read the articles, yet. What are your thoughts?

| Dogs can be very happy and healthy on a vegetarian diet, but you must make sure they get enough animal protein. I had mine on this diet for a few months and they did really good, but it was difficult to add all the protein needed, so we went back to red meat.

| If done correctly, dogs can be vegetarian. However, if she's only doing it because SHE is a vegetarian...well, I don't agree with that. There are some dogs out there that are allergic to animal protein so they HAVE to be on it, but I don't agree on principle that you should force your omnivore dog to be a vegetarian. BUT that's her choice. I hope she's adding in all the necessary extras! I was a vegan for many, many years and fed (and continue to feed) my kiddos raw.

| I read a couple articles that said dogs are not meant to be vegetarians and it is not good for them unless they have some kind of health problem where they can not have meet. I also sat through a big things about dog food from a holistic vet who said the same things. They can get sick from being on a veterinarian diet if they have no health problems that require them to be. I would consult a vet nutritionist.

| Thanks for the feedback. I really feel that she is doing this because she is vegetarian, idk. I sounds as though she has done a lot of research.

| I feel the only research that's gonna matter the most is talking to a vet nutritionist.

| Yes, they can do fine. A medical problem is not necessary for a dog to be a vegetarian or vegan. The requirement is for nitrogen and amino acids, not a meat source. An ova-vegetarian diet is very good for dogs. Egg is a great source of protein, Vegan or strict vegetarian diets are a bit harder. It can be done though. Simply feeding vegetables will obviously hurt a dog. Soy/beans wirk fine. Ellie has been a vegetarian for two years. Loves her food and does fine. Ry prefers her food, too.
