Thinking of switching to Canine Caviar Bentley is 6 months and has been on Blue Wilderness Puppy since I got him home. He does well on it. No apparent skin issues. Not constant but he does have some noxious fumes to eek out of his butt from time to time. lol Overall he enjoys the food but I'm getting a bit tired of paying what I am for it and him basically eating only half of it. Here's the kicker. He picks out the life source bits and throws them all over the floor. I will give him one or 2 small feedings morning and evening of the food with warm water for gravy effect and he does inhale that down. Leave dry kibble out for free feeding between. It's the dry he picks out. I look like I have a rat problem around his food dish all those little black round pellets. I've put up with it, but like I said I'm a bit tired of throwing out almost half of what I'm paying. I love BB because of it's high rating, but think it's time for a switch. After reviewing what I am able to get locally. (Much easier to purchase as needed in stead of keeping up with anticipated needs and rushing to do mail order.) Canine Caviar appears to be my top pick. I had at one point considered Royal Canin but after reading ingredients list and it starts: Chicken meal, rice, chicken fat, corn gluten meal. They are now out. Also, thoughts on at what age to switch from puppy to adult would be appreciated as well. Wanted to get thought on Canine Caviar from other YT'ers. Thanks for the input. |
CC food Sorry to hear about the BB black bits, they contain much of the good stuff so it is not good he does not eat them. I used to feed BB also and it is good food, and my boy would eat the black bits. He seemed to go off the food after a while so, as CC was praised here, I now feed it. My dog does well on it but he needs to have some 'seasoning' like Parmesan cheese sprinkle or other treat things he likes over the kibble. He then eats all every time! It is very small round kibble the size of caviar and I like that as my baby does not chew but swallows food whole! I feed Chicken and Millet as he is used to chicken based foods. The problem with this food is that you either have to get your store to order it or send away for it by mail. It is also not possible to get samples. Another food similar to BB is Wellness, you might consider that? Good Luck, hope you find something your boy likes. |

I'm fortunate enough that a local non chain carries CC. Welness I know I can get at Petco or Petsmart. So now more food for though. Yes, pun intended. lol |
food I feed bb- my guys like it. I do put some water in it and a little wet chick. And veg. Canned. The poop is fine so i am afraid to change. I hope you find a good healthy food. |
Hi there- LOL Peanut did the same thing, he would pick out those little life source pieces. I have had Peanut on CC for about 8 months. (Open Sky) I’m pretty sure CC has a puppy food… I would leave Bentley on puppy till about 1 years old ( if I’m wrong someone correct me). |
We have always fed CC puppy to Princess Sophie. It's all shaped the same and she eats every bite! Sometimes we supplement with a little (I mean "little") canned or a few green beans but she always eats all of her CC so I have never worried about whether she is getting all that she needs. Good luck I hope you find what works best for you and your pup!! Blessings!! |

Are you ladies able to find CC in the 4.4 pound bags anywhere online? I wanted to get the Open Sky one for Toki to try but nowhere near me sells it and I don't want to buy a honkin' huge 12 pound bag...we would never get through it lol |

I meant to add that I ordered it from natures pet cuisine.. |
CC it is. Well just got home from our local non-chain pet store. They carry CC. The owners have yorkies as well and they gushed over my food choice. They said that's all they feed theirs. The guaranteed me Bentley will love it. I don't think I'll be doing the mixing the two so he will get used to it. He pulled out ALL the BB kibble that was in the bowl and ate all the CC like this little boy has never been fed his entire life. After researching online and seeing where the owner who create the CC line had a great dane that lived to be 17 which is so unheard of. And the protein ration making complete sense to prevent food allergies. I knew I wanted to use CC. Plus the fact that I'm able to buy it from a locally owned business is a plus. |
Oh and another plus. It's actually $3 less than what I was paying for the same size bag of BB. :D |
Cc food So happy you are able to get the food locally and that your baby likes it. I was impressed by the info on the website and by their attention to detail and quality control. It is a shame it is not stocked by many pet stores and most of never heard of the food! You are lucky to have a local supplier. Hope he does well on the food. |
Inhaling the entire bowl of food. Ok question for those of you who do feed CC. Do you free feed or schedule feed? Usually I will put out a cup of and he will graze off it for a day or two. Little stinker got up this morning barking off his head so I decided to put out the usual amount and he ate all but a tiny bit of it. I sure don't want him getting fat off this food but I don't want him staring most of the day either. Maybe it's a new food thing and he'll pace himself after the newness wears off? |
Mine all gained a little bc they eat (CC) it so well, I had to cut down their portions. I'm amazed how even my pickiest will eat it w/out any toppings, she prefers it moistened/ softened in warm water. I made a horrible mistake of buying another brand for rotation & they all had itchies, anal gland problems & soft poopies on it, I switched right back to CC & everything's back to normal! They're currently enjoying Canine Caviar Wilderness (grain free venison). They've had the Open Sky b4 & loved that too. |
Canine Caviar is a terrible food and the company's claims, that it is a cancer diet, are a joke. I have a hard time with companies that sell dog food on this basis. I have been using Farmina N&D Wild Boar and its the best I have ever used. My friend has been great at sharing with me. |

I will give you, your problem with the claim(the claim is to reduce risk, not prevent it all together so I see no false claim), but specifically what is wrong with the ingredients that make you claim it's a "terrible food"? Bad marketing in your eyes, does not automatically a bad product make. Actually any healthy diet free of GMOs, hormones, additives, and chemicals can seriously be considered a cancer reducing diet. For pets or humans. Cancer is a bit of a crap shoot, animals/humans can genetically pre-disposed to cancer no matter what they do. But obviously if you take some precautions you may better your odds a bit. My concern is overall good nutrition, at reasonable price. Car seat belts can be claimed as preventing auto accident deaths, however it's not 100%. Does not make seat belts terrible or the claim wrong. So I have no issue with the fact that a quality list of ingredients in a feed is claimed to be able to reduce the risk of cancer. Most all pet foods make claims they most likely should not. I have seen many commercial feeds made claims, such as natural, best you can get. Then if you do the homework the ingredients list is a bunch of scraps left over from processing of human foods. I look at ingredients lists and not claims. |

Cc We all have different opinions about the food we give our dogs. But to say it is a terrible food seems to me unfounded. I feel all we can go on is the company philosophy, ingredients, USA made, and recalls. As long as quality control is good then the manufacturing plant should not matter. Many here find their dogs do well on the food, as does mine. Do you have a bad experience which gives you the right to make this scary statement? If you know something that should concern us, please tell and I certainly would stop feeding it. I tried very hard to research this and other foods and can only do ones best. According to you I did a very poor research job! |

I personally love this food (CC)and so does my dog. My vet also agrees that this food is doing well for my dog. She didn't particularly like the Venison, but she loves Open Sky..For us, CC is an awesome food. Foxy is seven years old and we have searched a long time for a food that not only agrees with her, but is a good food as well. And for us CC is it! Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. |

Mine are doing fantastic on CC & that's all that matters...I look @ the ingredients 1st. |

I found this link: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/USCOURT...cv-00677-0.pdf CC doesn't have their own manufacturing plant, so they rely on other companies to make & package their food(s). So...is that a bad thing? According to the link of the lawsuit above, the manufacturing plant was not up to par, maybe that's why CC changed manufacturing companies...not CC's fault. What's the other 2 reasons, Nipper? Askin bc I really want to know. |
Thanks for the link mimimomo. If anything what you found proves that they are keeping an eye on their Q/A. To me that makes a good company, not a bad one. Personally the company that I work for has had 3 physical locations in it's history. It does not make my company bad. Each move was for improved quality and environment, and necessitated by company growth. |
I feed my two Yorkies Canine Caviar. They love it. One of them had been on Atopica for skin issues (yeast also). She is no longer on Atopica. I'm thinking it's the food. Also, I think the bag says not to mix it.., just change over. That's what I did and did not have any problems. In Minnesota we have a Chuck & Don's Pet store and they carry the 4 pound bag ($19 a bag). |
CC Patty: Glad you too are happy with CC food. What do you feed? I feed Chicken and Millet and when I order it from my local specialty pet store the 4 lb bag only costs around $14. Perhaps your variety is more expensive? |
