I feed the dog not by the bag recommendations. If I feed by the bag based on weight my golden would be eating 4-4.75 cups of kibble daily. Roxy would be eating 1/2 cup. Lucy would get 3/4 cup and Cozy would get 1 cup. Buddy gets 2 cups of kibble total for the day and each yorkie get 1/4 cup. That way they can all get snacks and not pork up. The key to getting your pup to loss weight is to feed less and make them move more! |
Honestly Jackson would be Fatty McFat if I fed him according to package!! Most bags suggest a 16lb dog be fed 1 cup - 1 1/4 cup! He gets 1/2 cup of kibble per day mixed with wet food, except on days where he's more active, I will feed as much as 2/3 cup per day or 3/4 depending on how much swimming he's done. He of course gets some treats and such too. My dads dogs are fairly inactive (except their JRT mix gets a lot more exericse in the summer, she spends her days outside in the yard almost all day while the kids are in the pool, etc) but they both only get a little over 1/4 cup of kibble per day. They need to lose weight but they also don't seem to want to eat more than this. So it works for them, they obviously must have slow metabolisms lol. |
We are also working on the weight here and we use green beans and walk 2 times sometimes 3x a day. treats are fruit and veggies. Daisy has lost 1lb and Pixie 8 oz so we are on our way. Pixie is supposed to weigh 6-6.5 and she now weighs 7 Daisy was 23 yikes and now weighs 22 Daisy is supposed to weigh 20lbs. |
Thanks everyone :) I usually measure the kibble in grams. Rufus gets 100gr (1 cup) per day and Nena gets 50gr (1/2 cup per day). I divide the food in 2. (they eat twice a day) Nena used to eat 60gr a day and I lowered it to 50gr. Maybe I'll start giving her 40gr now instead of 50gr. Nena's weight I posted in the beginning of the thread is the ideal weight according to my vet. Rufus is more active and his weight is good even-though he eats so much. Nena is my couch-potato :D We are still in progress of helping her loose the extra weight. We are getting there, it's not going fast but it's going :) |
All of my babies eat twice a day and the vet says they are the perfect weight, now the new fosters are a bit overweight but we are working on that with lots of walks |
Toki used to be 10 pounds and got down to around 8.5. What worked for us initially was that I switched her to a higher protein/higher fiber/lower fat food that was also lower in calories. We used Wellness Core Reduced Fat (she got strictly 1/2 cup each day of this (broken up into 2 meals)...no treats or edible chews or extras) ...after she lost about a pound, I switched her back over to a regular food (I think it was Fromm or something like that) and I cut her amounts down quite a bit from what I had been feeding her initially...she now gets probably around 3 tbsp twice a day and we exercise her regularly so she is able to have a small amount of treats or wet food added. At the time we were losing weight, her activity had to be restricted but if we didn't have restrictions, I probably just would have kept her on her regular food (but cut down the amounts and had something low calorie like green beans or canned pumpkin) and gone on more frequent walks. |
We have 4 porky Yorkies !! (:)) Been working on them for the past two year maybe more to get their weight to a reasonable one for their size. Started with portion control in separate bowls, cut back on snacks and lot of running in the yard. They were not one bit happy about the portions I am now giving them but they have all lost and have kept it off now for about a year, so tuff cookies ! If you can find a safe, fenced in area to take her to run off lead that would be great. Lots of fast, vigorous exercise. I must say that thee three of mine that are fixed are all over weight. It only happened after their surgeries. Up until than they were well proportioned and at a good weight. |
The only fenced yard I can think of is the football field of my boyfriend's club. When the weather is nice, we go there and let them run free in the field (ofcourse when the game is over :D ) But that is only once a week, when the weather is nice. |

Any comments on what? |
Becase both my guys have LP and Max has whimpy hips too...I weigh thier food every day. They each eat 35 grams of wet/dry @ breakfast and dinner and 1/8 cup hard kibble @ lunch. That way there is no guess work and you don't accidentally over or underfill the measuring cup. That leaves one snack each in the evening. A small buiscit for each (the little tiny ones) |
