Tips for losing weight Nena is a bit overweight. She is weighing a bit over 4 kg (8.8 pounds) and her weight has to be between 3 and 3,5 kg (6,6 - 7.7 pounds) The vet told me to watch her weight because the chance of her gaining weight after spaying is big (she will be spayed this august). I give my dogs Hills Science Plan. The amount I give them is according to what they advice (what is written on the package). I cut back on treats and started walking more often with them, and now that the weather is getting better I started running with them (not much, 30 minutes more or less and with pauses in between). But her weight isn't changing. Are there any tips on what I can do to help her now and after she gets spayed? Thanks in advance :) |
i dont have any advice but wanted to say the best of luck and hopefully others will be able to help. ;) |

Ziva had to lose weight after her last vet visit. I was surprised at how square and stocky she had become- so slowly we accepted it as her natural shape. I had to cut back on her food quite a lot before we saw a difference over a few months. She now eats 1Tablespoon/am and 1/4 cup /pm. That leaves us just a little room for "good girl "treats. She is now just a touch over 7 lbs down from over 8lbs! It took 6 months. |

Jada packed on an extra 2 lbs when we first adopted her. She came to us underweight at 4lbs 8ozs and our vet wanted her to get aroung 5lb 5 ozs. I over did it and she got up to 7lbs  I started adding frozen salt free green beans to her kibble and cutting her portion by 1/3 for the weight I wanted her to reach. It did take over a year to get that extra weight off, but the green beans work. I also don't give any treats other than green beans or low cal veggies she likes. So far she has kept the weight steady at 5lb 5oz for two years now. |
I give her the amount of the weight she should have (3kg). I will try using the green beans ;) |
Also try carrots too |
She is very picky, so I'll see what works :D Keep the tips coming ;) |
I think dog food recommended feeding amounts are on the high side. Try cutting back the kibble too. Max gained weight and was headed toward being overweight, so I cut his lunch in half. We also went back to our morning walk routine, in addition to the evening outing. He has taken off 3 - 4 ounces. Best wishes to Nena. |
Thank you :) |
Our Max is over weight, too. When we got him neutered he gained so much weight! He was at a hefty 8 lbs and now is down about 1/2 pound. I have recently cut his kibble to 1/4 cup with green beans added to his meal. I have cut the treat to nothing and try to get him to walk as much as possible. He is a couch potato! |

Rufus loves going out with me and Nena is like 'mom, I wanna go back home..' |
Our Lola was a puppy mill rescue who came starved and underweight. She was food obsessed, and quickly became overweight. We kept the same brand of food, but switched to the weight control formula. We decreased the amount slightly, and added the salt free green beans and carrots to increase the bulk, so that she would not always be hungry. We started walking at least a mile 2x day. She lost the extra weight, and so did I. I just commented to my husband last night on what a different dog she is now, running and playing. She is no longer a lazy couch potato. We love the new and improved Lola. We are having such fun with her again. Best wishes! |
Thanks for sharing your story! I will try and use all the tips I got :) |
Your vet can best guide you of the ideal weight for your dog’s breed and height and develop a strategy for getting him back on track. He can also make you aware of any potential health concerns. |
I feed the dog not by the bag recommendations. If I feed by the bag based on weight my golden would be eating 4-4.75 cups of kibble daily. Roxy would be eating 1/2 cup. Lucy would get 3/4 cup and Cozy would get 1 cup. Buddy gets 2 cups of kibble total for the day and each yorkie get 1/4 cup. That way they can all get snacks and not pork up. The key to getting your pup to loss weight is to feed less and make them move more! |
Honestly Jackson would be Fatty McFat if I fed him according to package!! Most bags suggest a 16lb dog be fed 1 cup - 1 1/4 cup! He gets 1/2 cup of kibble per day mixed with wet food, except on days where he's more active, I will feed as much as 2/3 cup per day or 3/4 depending on how much swimming he's done. He of course gets some treats and such too. My dads dogs are fairly inactive (except their JRT mix gets a lot more exericse in the summer, she spends her days outside in the yard almost all day while the kids are in the pool, etc) but they both only get a little over 1/4 cup of kibble per day. They need to lose weight but they also don't seem to want to eat more than this. So it works for them, they obviously must have slow metabolisms lol. |
We are also working on the weight here and we use green beans and walk 2 times sometimes 3x a day. treats are fruit and veggies. Daisy has lost 1lb and Pixie 8 oz so we are on our way. Pixie is supposed to weigh 6-6.5 and she now weighs 7 Daisy was 23 yikes and now weighs 22 Daisy is supposed to weigh 20lbs. |
Thanks everyone :) I usually measure the kibble in grams. Rufus gets 100gr (1 cup) per day and Nena gets 50gr (1/2 cup per day). I divide the food in 2. (they eat twice a day) Nena used to eat 60gr a day and I lowered it to 50gr. Maybe I'll start giving her 40gr now instead of 50gr. Nena's weight I posted in the beginning of the thread is the ideal weight according to my vet. Rufus is more active and his weight is good even-though he eats so much. Nena is my couch-potato :D We are still in progress of helping her loose the extra weight. We are getting there, it's not going fast but it's going :) |
All of my babies eat twice a day and the vet says they are the perfect weight, now the new fosters are a bit overweight but we are working on that with lots of walks |
Toki used to be 10 pounds and got down to around 8.5. What worked for us initially was that I switched her to a higher protein/higher fiber/lower fat food that was also lower in calories. We used Wellness Core Reduced Fat (she got strictly 1/2 cup each day of this (broken up into 2 meals)...no treats or edible chews or extras) ...after she lost about a pound, I switched her back over to a regular food (I think it was Fromm or something like that) and I cut her amounts down quite a bit from what I had been feeding her initially...she now gets probably around 3 tbsp twice a day and we exercise her regularly so she is able to have a small amount of treats or wet food added. At the time we were losing weight, her activity had to be restricted but if we didn't have restrictions, I probably just would have kept her on her regular food (but cut down the amounts and had something low calorie like green beans or canned pumpkin) and gone on more frequent walks. |
We have 4 porky Yorkies !! (:)) Been working on them for the past two year maybe more to get their weight to a reasonable one for their size. Started with portion control in separate bowls, cut back on snacks and lot of running in the yard. They were not one bit happy about the portions I am now giving them but they have all lost and have kept it off now for about a year, so tuff cookies ! If you can find a safe, fenced in area to take her to run off lead that would be great. Lots of fast, vigorous exercise. I must say that thee three of mine that are fixed are all over weight. It only happened after their surgeries. Up until than they were well proportioned and at a good weight. |
The only fenced yard I can think of is the football field of my boyfriend's club. When the weather is nice, we go there and let them run free in the field (ofcourse when the game is over :D ) But that is only once a week, when the weather is nice. |

Any comments on what? |
Becase both my guys have LP and Max has whimpy hips too...I weigh thier food every day. They each eat 35 grams of wet/dry @ breakfast and dinner and 1/8 cup hard kibble @ lunch. That way there is no guess work and you don't accidentally over or underfill the measuring cup. That leaves one snack each in the evening. A small buiscit for each (the little tiny ones) |
