| is heartworm testing needed? My babies were tested for HW when I got them, and have never missed a dose of their HW preventative. I'm wondering if they still need to be tested, and if so, why?

| It's good to test yearly to make sure the preventative is working. It is possible for the heartworms to eventually build immunity to the preventatives, the only way to tell if this is happening is to test dogs at regular intervals, so that changes can be made to keep heartworms under control.

| Annual testing is required for us to have the prescription for HW preventatives renewed. I thought it was the same for all HW preventatives.

| Over the years I have heard of several instances where a dog on heart worm prevention still got heart worms so it is best to check periodically.

| That's how they force compliance, which is fine bc it needs to be done to keep all dogs safe. By doing the test every year, if a particular area starts showing positive tests, they'll be investigating why and work to correct the problem before it spreads, hopefully.

| I asked the vet today when I took Phoebe for her yearly check up. He recommended re testing every 2-3 years. I had it done anyway to be safe.
