Benadryl

Great thread! I was wondering this the other day- my dads dog is highly allergic to bees. Last time she got stung, she swell up soooo much and so fast, so my dad was just saying he wants to keep Benadryl on hand.

I need to get myself a doggie first aid kit with summer and outdoor activities coming up.

In a case like this he should have injecable drugs with the dog at all times. This is what I have to do for Ellie now.

Good to know! We took her to ER vet (she was struggling to be able to breathe) but of course it cost a pretty penny. Do you mean like an Epi pen?

Yup.

I just have inj benadryl for E. we were too far out from a vet when it happened. Almost lost her. So her backpack with drug goes with her whenever she leaves home and will be outside.

Your scary experience with Ellie is what plays in the back of my mind when my guys are sniffing around in the clover where bees lurk. I would like to have an injectable. Is this something a vet is willing to give anyone, or does the dog have to have a reaction to a sting first?

It is moreso for pups that have already reacted, esp. if more than a couple minutes from a 24/7 staffed vet. Never hurts to ask though.

Even for people who have an epi pen, it is highly recommended to go to the ED even if you feel better after using it, because the reaction may recur when the epi wears off and the patient may also need a course of steroids as well as benadryl to counteract the reaction. The epi pen is to keep the person (or dog) alive long enough to get further treatment. Of course, I know you, like I, would pay whatever it takes to protect our furbabies...but it sure would be nice to save that ER bill...

Absolutely.

Even after injecting, a vet is still necessary.

we give are bella the child soft chew 12.5 mg walmart brand ! per are vet and she loves it. seems to work ! good luck
