| How frequently should a small yorkie puppy have a bowel movement? Gross question I know, but I still have to ask. How frequently should a fairly small 9 week old yorkie have bowel movements? Also is it normal for the movements to be really small? Is it abnormal to only use the bathroom once every day or 2? Thanks in advance in help with this yucky but important question! |

| Sounds like he might be constipated. Is he straining when he does go? Vet check would be wise....

| No he wasn't straining. I don't have him now he's back with the breeders for another month or so, but I am just wondering in general what is normal and what is not. |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Normal bowel movements depend somewhat on how often you feed a day. And yes Yorkies even as adults have small bowel movements. Kind of relative to the amount and digestibility of the food they are consuming. The more "filler" ingredients - generally the larger the bowel movement. If you feed twice a day, I expect bowel movements twice per day. Big or small dogs this has held true for my dogs. Hope this helps

| Yes thank you that does help! I free fed him while he was here and he definitely wasn't a huge eater. Yes he ate small amounts frequently but it was like 10 pieces of kibble at a time max! So many questions about these guys! I've never owned such a small dog and there is quite a few differences between a tiny yorkie and an average size dog! |

And I agree with Gemy, a BM after each meal. Their tummies are tiny... a tablespoon would fill them up, so increase frequency/# of meals per day to reach the maximum intake.

| Thank you Kjc. Any suggestions on a high quality wet food? I was wetting his kibble down but I'd like for him to put on a bit of weight so I'll try the wet food to see if he likes it! He was 1.8 lbs at 9 weeks. Im not sure how big he is now though. I thought smaller was better before owning him and then I realized that health is the primary concern for me! |

| Any food that doesn't have recalls, is not found in the grocery store, and that he'll eat is good. What is the breeder feeding? Most brands make canned food also. Wetting the kibble is very good too, although I have read that canned foods are more nutritious than dry.

| Ok thanks! I'll head to the pet store before he comes back! I'll let him have a bit of both. Probably free feed the kibble and give him the wet stuff once or twice a day. I've heard that kibble is good for their teeth so id like to keep him on that somewhat too! I wanna beef him up though haha. Every ounce he gains makes me a happy momma haha I was feeding him nutrience all natural puppy small breed. She was feeding him puppy chow I think? Which I heard is not so good. I took care of my dads cat for 2 months and couldn't help but spoil him with the can food (which my dad doesnt feed her). She really really loved it and Grim probably would too! |

| Kibble being good for their teeth is a myth. Best to start a brushing routine with him early on. Healthy teeth also come from good genes. Yes, Purina Puppy Chow is not the best choice, JMHO. Although I have fed pups on it and had them live a very long time. IDK! Lol! I have read for humans eating cheese before bedtime neutralizes the acids in the mouth that cause tooth decay. That would be great if it worked for dogs too!
