| UPDATE on Peanut's Surgery I thought I would post a picture of my handsome Lil man on his update! Thank you all for the prayers and thoughts.. I have good news and maybe bad (ok) news.. DH and I were going to get his surgery done this week- I took Peanut to my Mom's on Sat to hang out, I wanted to show my Mom his bump.. It's gone!! You can't see it, but you can still feel it.. It is just deep inside him. So this makes me think it is DEF not a tumor... which is good- It must be a hernia.. So I guess I will drop him off tomorrow and have the Vet re-exam him. I know you can still get the hernia repaired, but is at as necessary?? I think I am more stumped than I was...

I would continue on with the repair, there is a VERY small (and it's very very rare, so don't freak!) that one of the abdominal organs can get through the hole and get stuck. They call it strangulation, I think, which can cut off the blood supply to that organ. Now my vet has only seen a hernia that has gotten to the point of strangulation once, and the animal was neglected and had the hernia for a very very long time. So he just told me not to worry about it, but keep an eye on it. We ended up getting Sophia spayed very early, at about 12 weeks so we could do the repair at the same time. It's just something that I didn't want to have to worry about.

| Goodluck and blessings to Peanut on the upcoming surgery. I pray it goes fast and easy for that baby and you, too. Can't wait to read it's over and he's awake, doing well.

| Peanut is adorable in his picture. My father has an abdominal hernia that pops in an out, and he has a hiatal hernia, a hole in his diaphragm that allows his stomach to go up into his chest cavity . As Sarah explained, hernias pose a risk of things getting strangulated or pushed around. Benefits and risks are weighed when deciding to do surgery. I believe Peanut's is the type that I would opt to have fixed if our vet recommended it. Peanut is in my thoughts and prayers.

| What a handsome long legged boy. Does Peanut need a dental cleaning soon, could you combine procedures? Sending prayers and best wishes.

I Love all the colors and the trees in the background. He looks so happy!! I would see what your vet suggests, tomorrow. This is what I found from Vetinfo.com: Treatment of an Umbilical Hernia Not all umbilical hernias will require surgery for treatment. Hernias that are small and do not appear to be doing any damage will likely grow back together on their own as the dog ages. If the hernia is small enough and does not repair itself, there may be no cause for surgery if the umbilical hernia is not causing any supplemental damage. In other cases, when the umbilical hernia is large or appears to be strangulated, the only effective way to repair it is surgically. In this case, a small mesh lining will be placed in between the contents of the stomach and the abdomen, which will effectively keep the contents of the stomach and intestines in place. This type of surgery can only be done under general anesthesia, and most dogs will recover just fine without any side effects or future hernia problems. | |
