how old is too old to breed for the first time? We have a 6 1/2 year old female that we are trying to breed for the first time. She is of such great character and has been a great love for my husband and myself that we wanted to try and have one out of her line. She is beautiful and from some Champion Lines. Would appreciate any information. Thanks Polly

too old.. Most will say it is too old for a first breeding and it is 90% of the time..BUT I have learned no matter what is said some people are going to breed..so this is my opinion..for what it is worth. Your female needs to be spayed whether she is bred or not..if you have a good vet who will be there for you after hours etc..you might chance a breeding. I would do it if I had a vet who spays at the same time they do a c-section, mine does..if not I would not put my female through it..two surgeries are one too many for me. Her size and health are a factor...I would have blood and urine tests done to see how her kidneys are doing. Heart must be strong. Not over or under weight. At last 5 pounds or more..more is better at 6 1/2yrs. Under 5 pounds..NO way I would chance it at her age. Needs good muscle tone..a fat, lazy bitch will be nothing but trouble for you..no matter the age. Not fair to her. Use a good stud, one who is used regular, good sperm count. Fed her well, but do not over feed and under or over exercise her. I would put her on an antibotic after the breeding for 7 days..older females tend to get infections when bred later. When all goes well, breeding a litter is a joy. When all goes wrong, it is heartbreak beyond words.

Your female is too old for her first litter . A person may do it but he or she will be the only one to live with the consequences if something wrong happens to the yorkie girl .

breeding Thank everyone for their reply's on breeding. I failed to say that I had already takein our little Mitzy to the vet and she thought that it would be fine to breed her. I don't know that we have been successful, but we did want another puppy out of her. Just wanted to say thank you and appreciate any information as we go forward. We will definitely keep her in contact with the vet and probably will have her xrayed when it comes closer to time if she appears to be pregnant.

Breeding Sorry that I confused. This is our Misty's first breeding, by referring to another puppy I just meant that we want a pup out of her as she has been such a great puppy and addition to our family. Mitsy is 6 1/2 years old. We had tried one other time to breed her and it just didn't take, don't know if was wrong on timing or if it might have been the male that we used, but this little male is about 2 1/2 lbs and a has produced pups before. If she isn't breed this time we are going to have her spay soon. We are trying to be responsible with her and was advised by the vet that we have been using all of her life that she should be fine. Thank you again for your input.
