| help with prescription food Urinary (urgent) Today I was told by vet that Rocky needs that food, Royal Canin Urinary was pointed out ..however I am worried because its not specific to yorkies (he has been eating that brand of food for yorkies). The nurse just didnt have an answer for my concern, suggested I contact Royal Canin !! in the meantime he was prescribed antibiotic for urinary infection , found some crystals and vet thinks he is not breaking down foord properly... all this is new to me , discovered during this tests before the dental cleaning |

| I wouldn't worry at all. Breed-specific foods are mostly a gimmick anyways. Your pup will be 100% fine!

| I suspected it, like you say, all gimmicks, I checkedd the contents of the Royal Canin Urinary against the Royal's Yorkies... practically identical, just a bit lower calories so I will show the printout to the vet, I dont think I need to switch |

| My boys were on the Royal Canin Urinary SO for a couple months after the vet found crystals. It seemed to really help them. We were able to go back to normal food after the crystals were gone |

| The Prescription food is best for your pup. If you had a Goldendoodle would you feed it half poodle and half golden retriever formula? I highly doubt it. I hope your pup feels better soon.

| There is a difference in the two formulas....there are different ingredients, in different quantities and %. It is the "practically identical" that is going to jump up and bite you in the butt! YOU NEED TO FEED THE PRESCRIPTION FORMULA! (If you choose to continue to feed the non prescription formula, then I do hope you dont blame the dog food when/if things get worse!) |

YT Addict | Did your vet do any x-rays or blood work on Rocky? Over the winter I noticed when my yorkie Barkley urinated in the snow that there was blood in his urine. My vet told me it was probably crystals irritating his urethra and to give him cranberry juice. Then a few months later he suddenly became ill and when I took him to the vet they found 7 bladder stones. Two of the stones had gone into his urethra. He had to have surgery to remove them and was put on Royal Canin SO. He was always a picky eater but he seemed to like this food. I mixed the dry and canned food and he gobbled it up. Another thing the vet told me was that he could not have anything else to eat besides the food, no cookies, chewie sticks, or fruits/veggies. It was hard and I felt bad but I had to adhere to it to keep those stones away. I hope the food works for Rocky! |

but in general, feeding regular (not RX) breed specific foods is a gimmick. Yes all breeds are a bit different, and may require different things (such as large breeds need a low phosphorus/low calcium food while growing)... if you take a look at all of Royal Canin's breed specific foods, they're all pretty much identical.
