Chicken and Rice diet only Brandi has a really sensitive tummy. Right now she is on science diet gastrointestinal diet per the vet's orders. I would like to switch her to an chicken and rice diet only long term. She does great with this and doesn't have any issues with this diet. I've tried multiple foods and either her poop is too soft or hard. In addition some foods give her an upset tummy. We've been to two vets and she is otherwise healthy. She's had ultrasounds, bloodwork, urinalysis and so far nothing has revealed why she has such a sensitve tummy. I noticed when she eats the plain old chicken and rice, she has absolutely no issues. I am concerned that she might not be getting all of her nutrients with just chicken and rice. My question is the chicken and rice diet okay to let her have long term? I was thinking maybe getting vitamin supplements to cover any nutrient holes in her diet. |
Its okay but youll have to suppliment. ive read posts from people who have sought a pet nutritionalist and they said they were using balanceit as a suppliment |
My Biewer was sometimes having digestive problems until I put her on Nature's Variety Duck & Turkey. I also used to add 1/4 teaspoon of Honest Kitchen's Perfect Form herbal blend which aids digestive health. Just 1/4 tsp sprinkled on morning kibble. I also used to purchase psyllium husk, it's a fiber supplement - you can get it at a health food store. I used to add 1/2 tsp of this on her morning kibble as well. I haven't added the herbal blend or husk in a few months and she seems to be doing well with just the Nature's Variety Duck & Turkey. |
I have been through the tummy problems with my Rosie. She was on Science Diet for a long time and then I changed to homecooking. I started with a brown rice and chicken diet. I have been able to expand that since then. She is also able to handle butternut squash and sweet potatoes. Two very important things, 1. Get a recipe for the diet from a nutrionist 2. Buy a supplement to go with it. I used petdiets.com for my recipe and I use BalanceIt for a supplement. It was the best thing ever for my Rosie. She has been on it for a long time now and doing very well. We used to be at the vet numerous times per year with tummy issues. But since I have started home cooking, we have only had one or two issues. I think it was a great choice. |
For many years, my dogs ate dark meat chicken and brown rice with veggies. So yes you can feed that to your dog as long as your vet is ok with it. I use the vet nutritionist Dr Remillard, and her site is Welcome to Pet Diets and diets through there are $25. All of my dogs have her diets, and I use the Balance It product lines for my dogs with good success. I've been home cooking for 12 years. |
With the Current reports of arsenic in rice. I am avoiding rice myself. |

I used to cook for Gracie. However, she did not like grains like rice. I switched her to sweet potato instead of the rice and she loved it. You may want to try sweet potato now and then. Sweet potato is very nutrient rich and easy to digest. I would also give Gracie green beans and other veggies that I ran trough the food processor. Since your dog has stomach issues you would only want to add one additional ingredient at a time and wait to see how she does with it before adding anything else. I used, and still use, The Missing Link as a supplement. It's a great food based nutritional supplement that is very digestible. If it is important to you, they sell all natural chicken in most meat departments. That type of chicken has not had the steroid, antibiotic and hormone injections that mass marked chicken does. |
Unless this chicken and rice diet is cet ordered I onky do it for diarriah recovery. Even if so some suppliment fir vitamins and minerals will be needed. |
Thanks for the replies everyone. But now I have another problem....actually two. Brandi is doing great on the rice and chicken diet. In fact she loves it so much, she eats the same meal twice:D:D:D. Now Brandi has never ate her own poop, she has eaten the cat's poop but never her own. When I started feeding her this new diet I was getting really concerned because she wan't pooping until I caught her in the act. The other thing is my cat also loves chicken and rice and she will try to steal Brandi's food while she is still eating. So am I going to have start feeding them both chicken and rice? Just when I thought life was getting easier. |

I have cats too. When you feed the chickern and rice you could give your cat a few morsels of chicken to satisfy them as long as it isnt the meal and they are still eating the cat food. We do that all the time because our cats are beggers too |
