I used to be a PETA member, I beleive in the ethical treatment of animals but the whole extremism, pushing of veganism and petroleum alternatives to natural sustainable ones (oh and antipurebreeding) turned me off.

I just support the SPCA as a whole now.

iPeta does alot of wonderful things and I would be a member if there wasnt the extremism. I support local entities like our humane society because they are no kill and our local spay neuter clinic that spays and neuters animals regardless of income. I also support world wildlife fund because they are doing alot for conservation efforts for animals. I am really careful what I support

My babe is on chicken and rice too. Constipation problems though :/ Vet said to add benefiber to provide the fiber he needs.

For a filler Quinoa is way better than rice. It is high protein almost like beans but no quite. Healthy everyway you look at it. Rice isn't really healthy at all unless you look at brown or black. And they are just better than white. Just another option. Gluten free sometime that helps also.

Actually brown is healthier only for humans. Dogs find it much harder to digest than white. Quinoa does sound very interesting, are you feeding it to your dogs?

I've gave Moki Quinoa. But I use Honest kitchen as a topper and they use Quinoa. I'm using homemade and kibble for the moment. I'm looking into raw and Homemade. But for Moki he can eat pretty much anything thats healthy and it hasn't affected his stool. I eat Quinoa when in the bush...so I know it give me a little energy when you aren't carrying much food. JMO

That is interesting because I get Rosie's recipe from a vet nutritionist. Her recipe actually called for brown rice in it. I don't feed her rice at all any longer but do know that it was recommended. I will get hold of Dr. R and find out.

Innova advertises their brown rice formulas as creating less piles for owners to clean up...wonder what that's marketing code for.

I feed mine The Honest Kitchen THRIVE which is organic chicken w/quinoa. They LOVE it & their stool is small & firm...it smells pretty good too, not their poopie but the food loll!

My dad is a candidate for diabetes 2, so he's very selective in his diet. He's so skinny, I worry that he's not getting enough nutrients, but he eats quinoa since it has a low glucose level.

Like Nancy mentioned, brown rice is very hard for dogs to digest, unless it's cooked just right.

I think rice is the less offensive of all the grains. I follow a paleo lifestyle and eat zero grains or psedo-grains, but if I wanted to eat them, I'd choose rice over quinoa since I'd want to avoid the antinutrient properties of quinoa. For the dogs, I go with sweet potatoes or butternut squash over grains these days. I have found in the past that the dogs did like and well tolerate brown rice with no digestive issues.

This antinutrient property is only for grains that are not properly prepared. Its reduced if you cook or soak. You can research that and see. Quinoa is a complete protien. Rice have very little nutritional value. But I don't know how any of it affects dogs??Honest Kitchen may ormaynot have researched it for there menu?? They maybe the only FDA approved human grade dog food? I would think they had some research into it?

I know nothing about Quinoa but I have fed Rosie the brown rice. She has IBS and Dr. Remillard helped prepare her recipe. And it did have brown rice which Rosie was able to handle very well. I am not using it any longer but only because Rosie prefers the Sweet Potato and Butternut Squash over everything else.

We are probably talking about different things here and I don't want to derail the thread. I avoid foods with high saponin contents like quinoa. I no longer eat grains and follow a paleo lifestyle so I don't find any of them to be useful. Rice has the least amount of anti-nutrients of all the grains from this perspective.

As for the dogs, I feed my boys chicken and butternut squash. Sometimes I use sweet potatoes. Unfortunately, my female has to eat these anti-nutritious legumes (chick peas) but I sneak her in an egg a couple of times a week to give her some real nutrition. She's a complicated dog to manage thanks to her horrible breeding, so my goal is to keep her alive.

Rice was better tolerated by my dogs than any other grain ever was. Oatmeal once landed my female in the hospital on an IV with severe gastritis and vomiting.
