Rice is very starchy and starches are not natural to a dog's digestive or nutrient needs. Of course many dog food companies have used grains as fillers for years. Sweet potato is very digestible and nutrient rich. My baby refuses to eat grains. When I used to cook for her she would act really hungry until I actually gave her the food and then she would just pick at it. When I finally switched from using grains to sweet potato she started eating like she was half starved. I guess she kind of was since she was such a poor eater until then.
Many of the grain free food makers have started using white potatoes to replace grains but white potatoes are also very starchy and I don't consider them a sound alternative, especially for a small dog. That is a lot of white potato for a little body to handle everyday. |
