No, prescription foods by those companies are well researched and tested. They meet the needs of pups with different conditions...such as renal disease. I have had a couple of pups over the years on Purina NF and it has definitely helped them to live longer. When you feed that food and follow up with labs, unless a pup is just so far gone that it is over, their numbers on their BUN and Creatinine will improve greatly. Just one example.

What is the up-side of raw feeding that makes it worth the risks? Do dogs live way longer or have increased immunity against diseases?

I met a lady with puppy looking yorkie while ago,and the puppy turned out to be 16yrs old no health problems what so ever, including cataracts!!! she was full of energy, and she's been on raw food all her life.

Slow down or reverse arthritis, coat health, skin health, lessening of allergen effects, significant reduction of seizures in epileptics, general teeth health is proven better on average in dogs fed raw, lesser risk of infection (despite that also being a side effect-bacterial infections) increased immunities, and increased neurological benefits, in general dogs on a raw diet have healthier cells and live longer as well, while not having even common breed inherent issues present as they age.

Lessened noted issues with 'tummy troubles'

Of course as with anything it doesn't work for everyone.

There's ton more, and if you feed BARF or model prey raw there are even more.

Not to mention there are further increases in benefits to the raw feeding in breeding dogs.

Elvis has both early onset severe arthritis and epilepsy one of the first things that was suggested was to put him on a raw diet-by both my vet, a consulting vet and the neurology team at UC Davis.

I have feed raw to my dogs for over 5+ years. How-ever I don't start on raw until after one year old.

I believe by then their immune systems are fully operational.

I don't and have never had to worry about all the various Kibble recalls. I actually changed to raw because my boy Magic, despite varying high premium kibble, caused after one or two weeks on it, extreme diarrehea. Since that time and on raw he has never had that problem.

It is also hard to feed raw to one dog, and not to the others, so gradually I switched over all the dogs to raw. I do throw a bit of kibble in their food daily, as when we travel it is very hard to transport raw across a border. This gives me some breathing space to once I get across the border to prepare their meals.

I do know that when Zoey needed to go for heartworm treatment, i was told that if I feed her raw, then she essentially would be treated like an outcast in the hospital. Everyone would have to handle her gloved et al.

So I began to cook the meat.

Benefits for us were all tummy.
We spent upwards $2,500 on Gizmo and had tried almost everything to get him to eat/gain weight and not have and upset tummy.

However, I'm not going to say out method works for all dogs, but it works for my Gizzyman. :)

This is not a law. No AVMA policy serves as a law.But if certain people back it, then obviously they may try to make it a law. It would be ridiculous and impossible to enforce

Veterinary associations put out guidelines like this all the time. Some vets will pay attention to it and some won't. But this is part of the role of these organizations. They are allowed to warn if they are concernedabout something. Look at the AAHA warning about yearly vaccines. I think the AVMA was in on that too.Do there is a case where recommendations went against big business.

I'd never want a law that would prohibit family pets from eating raw because...that is owner's choice (with the exception of feeding green meat, road kill, etc. bc that is going too far, imo). I do want vets and organizations to put out warnings if they believe something could be problematic.

I don't feed raw and do not feel it is safe enough for my liking. My vet feels the same way. That is not just based on what she has read, but also on what she has seen clinically and talked to colleagues about. At the same time, she is no Beneful/dog chow supporter either. She does not say not to feed raw, but does strongly suggest fecals be done and explains what she does not like about the diet.

I think for every argument supporting raw, there is a counterargument. The same may be able to be said about kibble, but it is still mire widely trusted.

IMO, do what you believe is best for your pets because if something goes wrong there will be nothing to regret.

I personally think homecooked is best. My yorkie now does much better on an rx diet. My boy has bladder issues and needs an rx food right now. And I don't have the time/energy most of the year to commit to cooking unless it is very important, so this is best for us.

I just can't fathom how a corn based junk dog food isn't a major issue, but me feeding my dogs raw model prey and BARF is like shock horror make the obvious possible side effects an issue of concern.

I get there is a possible health risk, but I don;t understand the tactics here and the exaggeration of known cases verses possible risk factors-especially when as others have noted if you follow the guidelines of raw feeding by those who are experts the major issues can usually be avoided.

Corn based junk dog food? Excuse me but while you may not approve of a reputable company that happens to do extensive feeding trials and research I really think calling what many feed their dogs junk food is crossing the line. This is aside from the fact that corn does not carry salmonella but raw chicken does.

You choose to feed what you choose to feed as do the rest of us...those of us who have said anything about raw food have been corrected in the past... so let's us all agree that calling what some feed junk is inappropriate.

The junk part was specifuc to known rneurotoxics as preservatives, rodent poisons as artifial flavorings and colorings, cancer causing sweeteners and not to mention meat byproducts cobtaining antibiotica hormones and tge pesticides used to grow the minimal amounts of fruits and vegtables that have subjective nutricial value depending on whos definition.

Not to your choices as I havent read up on them...however they seem to be rated lower on the clinical independat reviews. As was one if the ones you listed. Not sure if the RX versiins were included, I'll check.

Theres limited funding for promotion of raw diet as few companies have prepackage retail products, which is changing...finally. It will be nice to see the benefits of such in the future ... given its not headed off by means like the topic of this thread.

Even when I fed kibble it was independant labtitory tested as theI highest rated.

Raw BARF model prey raw are really more grass roots promoted and individual experience word of mouth promoted, for now.

No need....I do my consults with veterinary nutritionists...not online self proclaimed nutritionists. I am quite happy with what I feed my pups AND their overall health. As for cancer causing foods...knock wood...I have never had a pup with cancer...but if I did, I would not be blaming their food for it.
