| Is the Yorkie "well" after liver shunt surgery? If a Yorkie has liver shunt surgery and doing well after the surgery, are they then "well." Or does liver shunt cause any lingering/chronic conditions? I'm looking at a dog who has done well after the surgery, but just wonder if there will be remaining problems the rest of the dog's life related to it? I'm asking just so I can be prepared for vet/med expenses. |

| I believe they are well and remain so after a successful LS surgery, and follow up bloodwork for about a year. If all stays normal, no other problems should occur as a result of the liver shunt and/or surgery.

| I've been reading a lot about pet insurance and after reading a lot of posts on this site decided to start a savings account for Hope. My hubby may end up having to go on disability and I no longer work so the finances concern me a bit...but the insurance seems so high and there is a deductible per incident. :-P Makes me wonder if I'm better off just putting the money aside every month. |

Also why not apply for a Care Credit card now? That way if and when you need it you have it available. We don't have those things available in Canada, but I think it is an excellent idea. I have to tell you medical conditions happen, and can be expensive to treat. I will share my story with you, just so you can have a general idea. Magic my BRT took a bad fall just prior to his third birthday. By the time the dust settled in diagnosing his DLSS - Degenerative Lumbo Sacral Syndrome we were at about $3K. We have spent in physio/rehab at least another $7k or so, and his expenses will be ongoing as we try to keep him in top physical condition. Zoey my female BRT - was diagnosed with Lymphoma. We elected to go with chemotherapy; but we also had a couple of ER visits. The cost for this was $4K. Sadly we lost her two weeks ago. Karma my cat is on heart medication. The diagnosis and checkups so far $1000. Razzle Thank you Lord is so far healthy. Here is what I do tell my puppy buyers, that don't plan to buy pet insurance. Before you buy your puppy have at least $4000 in a savings account for them. This is your emergency fund. Put aside another $25 a month into that account and don't touch it for ordinary vet visits. Then you will continue to earn interest, and as your dog ages and special med's and or diagnostic tests are necessary you will start to utilize that fund. If your pup remains healthy and dies of natural causes; that fund dependent upon it's amount might be used to purchase another dog if you have more than $4000 left and also will be your new pups savings account.
