Oh why is his skin so flaky and dry all the sudden???? I gave Sheldon a bath yesterday, using the same shampoo and conditioner I have been using for 1 1/2 months and I noticed today, all the sudden his skin is so dry and flaky. I wonder if I didn't rinse the shampoo well enough. |
Joey's breeder said 90% if the time white flakes can come from not rinsing good enough, but she did add that dry air can also cause flaky skin. I imagine you have used your heater in your home last winter and that might dry out the skin, do you use a conditioner? It's important to use a conditioner since we bath Yorkies more than other dogs. My little foster had white flaky skin and I give him an extra dose of conditioner and I've also added a little ground flax seed to his diet. |
Thank you Nancy, I do have a conditioner and we are in CT so our heater has been on but we have radiators so not forced air. I would give him a bath to re-rinse and re-condition but he had his lyme vaccine today and the poor guy is not feeling too well. I will look into the flax seed :) Do you grind the seeds? Sheldon is on dry food only so I don't know how the flax seeds would work with his food. Some one mentioned they add some oil, maybe coconut to the dry food? Thanks again for your suggestions! |

I know lots of people recommend coconut oil, I bought some and then someone said it might cause pancreatitis so I didn't give it to him. I almost used it topically, but his problem seems to be clearing up. Not sure how much to use, but someone else here might know the dosage. There's also fish oil capsules, that many recommend. |
Ohh ok, I will try that then :) Sheldon is on now fresh grain free for small breed, not sure how the fat content compares to other food, let me check...it says crude fat 17%. It is a salmon, duck and turkey base food and it has flax seeds, omega 3 and 6 oils from coconut and canola. |

I use yorkie splash and shine, been giving him a bath with it for almost 2 months and never had any problems. I wonder if this would happen if you don't rinse the conditioner really well. I forgot to say I did a semi-rinse with the conditioner but never thought this would be the reason for the dryness and flakiness. |

Your food sounds like it's not causing any problems, so I think I would try looking at the grooming products, it may take a couple of months to see how a product works in time. |

Dry air inside, then you need a humidifier. Feeding dry kibble, then add a teaspoon of olive oil twice daily. Then make sure you have a gentle shampoo, and during the winter, dilute it down. Rinse really well. Use a good conditioner. Not one you "leave-in". Ground flax is more expensive than whole, so if you have a little coffee grinder, then buy the whole flax and grind yourself. Just grind about 1/4 cup at a time and keep in the fridge and add a teaspoon twice daily. Food can also be a major source of dry flakey skin and bumps that itch. It's completely impossible to figure out what the source of the allergy could be in a bag of kibble since the list of ingredients is extremely lengthy. I home cook but they are on a Vegan diet since they are allergic to beef, poultry, fish and dairy. It's easy to find the allergy with home cooking. ;) |

Are all of your dog’s allergic to beef, poultry, fish, and dairy, isn't that unusual? Do they come from the same line? Glad you found something that works. |
Hi, I was having the same problem of the dry flakey, dandruff with Beanie. I bought Salmon oil and I put a little bit in her food every day. It really has helped. |
I use coconut oil and the smell makes me a little sick. Too strong and no, it doesn't smell like pina colada and that's too bad lol I have used it on Sheldon's hair after he is all dry and brushed. The funny part is that he doesn't seem to be too itchy. |
Now where do you get salmon oil and how bad does that smell? His breath already has a fishy scent hehehe |

I get the salmon oil at PetSmart. It is actually made by GNC for dogs. It doesn't smell bad at all, which I was very surprised at. If she gets any in her face hairs, I just put ice cubes in her water and she "washes" her face searching for the ice cubes to chew on. Then I play with her with an old white sock and kind of wipe her face while we play. It gets any of the fishy smell off her. I have to fake her out to clean her face. LOL I also give her the Nylabone greenies and spray her mouth with this all natural tarter, plaque and breath spray. I have to wait till she is sleeping on my lap to spray the stuff on her teeth. Again, the fake out. BUT, it takes care of the fishy smell. |
I have to fake her out to clean her face. LOL hahaha, that was funny. Just wanted to let you know I gave Sheldon a bath today, made sure I rinsed both shampoo and conditioner really well. He has no flakes and his skin isn't dry :) Note to self...never use regular conditioner as a leave in. Thank you all so much for all the suggestions :) |
The coconut oil I have smells like coconut and not rancid coconut it smells good |
where did you get it? |

Riley gets environmental allergies, and I have been putting Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Pet once a day. I had the liquid and then was given a bottle of the pills. I just snip the end of the pill and squeeze it on his food. CNGJqZKbpq8CFcJM4AoduwvEYA Nordic Naturals for Dogs at Only Natural Pet Store I also have a bottle of Nutiva Coconut Oil that I got from GNC..... I will sometimes put some on a cotton ball and wipe Riley's tummy with it.... but his vet told me that it is better to treat his dry skin from the inside out.... He told me to use the pills. :) https://store.nutiva.com/coconut-oil...FcXc4AodTynaXg |
Hmmm, my coconut oil came from the indian store. I have to put it in the microwave because it gets hard when is cold. @RileyDC, I think that leaving some conditioner cause the trouble. I think I am going to get some of those oil pills. Some one also said the use flax seeds. |
O.K. so is it me or are "allergies" the new thing today for dogs. Since when did dogs and even people have so many allergies? How did we and our canine friends survive years ago without this allergy diagnosis? |
