| Oh why is his skin so flaky and dry all the sudden???? I gave Sheldon a bath yesterday, using the same shampoo and conditioner I have been using for 1 1/2 months and I noticed today, all the sudden his skin is so dry and flaky. I wonder if I didn't rinse the shampoo well enough. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Joey's breeder said 90% if the time white flakes can come from not rinsing good enough, but she did add that dry air can also cause flaky skin. I imagine you have used your heater in your home last winter and that might dry out the skin, do you use a conditioner? It's important to use a conditioner since we bath Yorkies more than other dogs. My little foster had white flaky skin and I give him an extra dose of conditioner and I've also added a little ground flax seed to his diet.

| Thank you Nancy, I do have a conditioner and we are in CT so our heater has been on but we have radiators so not forced air. I would give him a bath to re-rinse and re-condition but he had his lyme vaccine today and the poor guy is not feeling too well. I will look into the flax seed Do you grind the seeds? Sheldon is on dry food only so I don't know how the flax seeds would work with his food. Some one mentioned they add some oil, maybe coconut to the dry food? Thanks again for your suggestions! |

I know lots of people recommend coconut oil, I bought some and then someone said it might cause pancreatitis so I didn't give it to him. I almost used it topically, but his problem seems to be clearing up. Not sure how much to use, but someone else here might know the dosage. There's also fish oil capsules, that many recommend.

| Ohh ok, I will try that then Sheldon is on now fresh grain free for small breed, not sure how the fat content compares to other food, let me check...it says crude fat 17%. It is a salmon, duck and turkey base food and it has flax seeds, omega 3 and 6 oils from coconut and canola. |

| I use yorkie splash and shine, been giving him a bath with it for almost 2 months and never had any problems. I wonder if this would happen if you don't rinse the conditioner really well. I forgot to say I did a semi-rinse with the conditioner but never thought this would be the reason for the dryness and flakiness. |

Your food sounds like it's not causing any problems, so I think I would try looking at the grooming products, it may take a couple of months to see how a product works in time.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Do Chachi and Jewels want to lick your hair all night long? Seriously, I've been thinking of putting that on Ralphies back, but I wondered if he'd lick it all night.

| Dry air inside, then you need a humidifier. Feeding dry kibble, then add a teaspoon of olive oil twice daily. Then make sure you have a gentle shampoo, and during the winter, dilute it down. Rinse really well. Use a good conditioner. Not one you "leave-in". Ground flax is more expensive than whole, so if you have a little coffee grinder, then buy the whole flax and grind yourself. Just grind about 1/4 cup at a time and keep in the fridge and add a teaspoon twice daily. Food can also be a major source of dry flakey skin and bumps that itch. It's completely impossible to figure out what the source of the allergy could be in a bag of kibble since the list of ingredients is extremely lengthy. I home cook but they are on a Vegan diet since they are allergic to beef, poultry, fish and dairy. It's easy to find the allergy with home cooking.

Are all of your dog’s allergic to beef, poultry, fish, and dairy, isn't that unusual? Do they come from the same line? Glad you found something that works.

| Hi, I was having the same problem of the dry flakey, dandruff with Beanie. I bought Salmon oil and I put a little bit in her food every day. It really has helped. |
