Taste of the Wild I am transitioning Mikki from SD to TOTW. I was given four different flavors for her to try. So I am wondering, Taste of the Wild feeders, which flavor does your pup prefer? Or does it not really matter which flavor? I gave her the Bison and Venison one. She seems to really really like it! :) |
Charlie and Natalie eats TOTW and the flavor doesn't really matter. Of course, I usually buy two bags and mix them, that way they don't get use to just one flavor but they are picky that way. I changed them to TOTW about a year ago and I have had no problems with it. Hope this helps and Good Luck! |
Macy is on TOTW Lamb and Pacific Salmon. I switch flavors from one day to the next and she loves them. She has been on TOTW for about a year with no problems. She didn't care for the bisson and it made her poos hard. |
Levi eats TOTW Sierra Mountain (the lamb flavor). We haven't tried any other varieties of TOTW - he does well on this formula and enjoys his food. |
We have transitioned to the Bison one. They love it :) |
My boy Buckley (golden Retriever) loves TOTW Salmon flavor. |
Thanks everyone! I think it sounds like this could be a good transition for us. She is picking out the TOTW and leaving the SD. I think she likes it!! |
Ziva and Abby eat TOTW Pacific stream by default. Their big sister, Lucy- the wheaten terrier has lots of digestive/allergy issues and the fish protein is the easiest for her to digest.Abby has eaten it since she came home and has never had an upset- . |
I got a box full of samples of Taste of the Wild from Diamond. My dogs loved them all, all 4 flavors. They are eating Precise right now though. I wanted to try switching to TOTW soon and see how they do on it. |

Protein level? What's the percent of protein in TOTW? 32 percent?I may be wrong, but I thought it was on the high side ( watch out for kidney burn out). |
Zhoie has been on TOTW Pacific Stream with Smoked Salmon for quite sometime now and loves it. It's 25.00 crude protein, I'm hoping that's not to high. |
We feed TOTW pacific stream because of the low digestible fish protien (25%) on the bag It shows 32% on the dogfoodanalysis web site? Most of the high ranked 6star foods show high protein levels. Does anyone know of a non chicken no grain food with a lower level? |

totw Winston has been on taste of the wild for a year and a half with no problems. vet says he looks good and healthy and teeth are good. he likes all the varieties, I change out each day and that way he doesn't get bored with any one. |

You're right, the Sierra Mountain and the Pacific Stream both have 25% protein. The High Prairie and the Wetlands both have 32% protein. The fat levels are also higher in the High Prairie and the Wetlands (I think it's 18% as opposed to 15% in the Sierra Mountain and Pacific Stream). |

And Sierra Mountain is also the lowest in calories for those who don't want a real high calorie food. |

Those two formulas have 15% Fat and 25% Protein. I also bought a few cans of the Pacific Stream and I occassionally put a teaspoon into his kibble... just to wet it and for a special treat. He goes nuts!! :) |
My lab eats TOTW and I am trying to change Jersey over to TOTW Pacific Stream. He is free fed and now picks out and eats the TOTW that I mix in with other food. I want to do the transition slowly as to not give him loose stool. It is not going to be very slow because now he just lets the other food sit until I put in more TOTW! |

Based on that and the protein content I switched mine over to the lamb formula. |

The boys eat Sierra Mountain (Lamb). They love it! |
If you don't mind your furkid having cat breath, feed TOTW Pacific Stream. Dori switched from Wellness about a year ago and we never looked back. Enthusiastic eater, small firm poops...what's not to like? She eats 1/4 c. twice daily. BTW, our vet said don't feed a high protein (like Origen). |

Looks like many of you are using the Sierra Mountain. They gave me a sample of that as well. We will try that one next! :) |
Ok, help ladies. Mikki does not like the Sierra Mountain or the Pacific Stream. Both of these are the ones that have the 25% protein. She loved the Bison and Venison one. Which has the higher protein. 32% or 37%? I don't remember. So, I am gathering that the higher protein is not good for our pups. Can anyone else recommend a food that their pup likes? I am trying to fnd it locally. I don't want to have to order it. Any help appreciated! |
I personally don't think that the 32% protein will be bad unless there is a medical condition that requires a lower protein level in the food. The people where I buy my food tried to steer me away from Taste of the Wild and said that their concern with it is the higher glycemic index rating (sugar content). They suggested Pulsar (made by Horizon, I haven't tried it yet), and Precise. My dogs are currently eating Precise Foundation and seem to be doing fine on it. It is not grain free though. Another grain free food in about the same price range as TOTW is Earthborn Hollistic. I think that also has a little higher protein. I still don't think I'd feel bad about feeding TOTW though. It is the best food Diamond makes. A lot of people feed it to their dogs and most seem to do very well on it. I sort of like the ingredients on the Wetlands formula because it uses chicken fat instead of canola oil. It is also 32% protein. I thought that if I end up getting TOTW, I'd start with the Sierra Mountain. Unfortunate that your baby doesn't care for it. I tried Before Grain buffalo formula and my dogs absolutely loved it. It was sort of high in fat and I was concerned about weight gain since my dogs are free fed though. Boy, they sure went through that stuff! I guess once you find a good food that works out well, it's worth it to stick with it. Good luck on your food quest. |
Oh, if you prefer a lower protein food, Natural Balance is another that comes to mind. They also have some grain free formulas that are low protein. |
