Why Why did I do it??

I knew better!! For a couple of yrs now, thank goodness...Bella was in the clear with no itching, biting, scratching. It seemed wonderful. She has been on Wellness, Solid Gold, & Blue Buffalo which seemed to do the trick. Well, I recently changed her food because she becomes so picky & I bought Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier 28. She was back into the old routine of itching, biting, scratching. I'm so mad at myself for changing. Poor baby. Anyway, NEVER AGAIN.
My question is: How long does it take to get completely out of her system?? I'm giving her Benadryl which helps. She's been off the food for about a 10 days.

If she has a food intolerance, usually it resolves pretty quickly. If it is a true allergy, it can take weeks. This is based on my experience with a dog that has both so I'm sure it isn't set in stone. If the benadryl helps her, I'd continue it. It never did anything for my dog. Hope she feels better soon!

Thanks so much! Well, the benadryl seems to help her sleep. She's wearing pjs/tee shirt. It helps deter her from biting & seems to comfort her. She now has 2 small red spots on her tummy. I know we were undecided whether it truly was her food or outside allergies ~ grass?? I'm pretty convinced about the food. She has done so well for the past 2 yrs.

Would anyone recommend having a cortisone shot right now for this? Or should I see if this gets better in about a week or so?

Antihistamines don't work well in a lot of dogs. And they really don't work well for food allergies. So I'm surprised they are really helping. Are you sure there isn't an environmental allergy and the food just pushed her over the threshold?

Could take days, but up to 12 weeks.. What is she allergic to? Lots of Yorkies get itchy from RC. My girl did. Great brand, but unless they have a hydrolyzed formula, there are probably better choices for dogs that are already itchy.

The vet should decide if steroids (injectable and/or oral) are appropriate right now based on quality of life. When my girl gets to her itching and scratching, it is so bad that she usually has to have steroids. However, long-term if this is thought to be environmental, there are better options.

Yes, definitely will never change her food again. There is a possiblity of it being an environmental allergy, but don't understand if so...why it bothers her only sometimes & not all the time. We stopped letting her run free in the backyard during the summer because we were concerned about that & she did go to a new place recently walking. There again, we've taken her on many trips with no problems. Perplexing??

My fur-niece, Gemma is an allergic dog. She was put on Benadryl and we bathed her every few days with medicated shampoo, which helped a little. It unfortunately lasted weeks. My girls have done well on TOTW, Wellness, Now... to name a few brands, but the best has been home cooked. No eye boogers, no itching, and they smell good! If you'd like the ingredients, PM me

Thanks so much! It's week 5 now for Bella since I changed her food. It's awful. She was doing so wonderful for so long. I will never stop blaming myself.
