Yorkie Talker | Separation Issues & Anxiety? Does anyone have a baby who severely attached to them? How does your little one react to you leaving? How do they act when you return? Alright, so Baxter is 3 years old & is my shadow at first I could hardly go to the bathroom and shower for ten minutes without him crying bloody murder. After a while I just gave up and started leaving the door open, so he has stick his head in just to make sure I didn't leave him. I rarely leave the house without him because as soon as the front door closes, once again he's crying so loud the neighbors probably think we are torturing him! When I come back from the store or wherever I HAVE to go, he's our bed licking the bedding, realizes I'm home, grabs a toy and paws at me while crying like I was gone for seven years! The vet said it's Anxiety and that he has separation anxiety, licking things helps him cope with me being away..

| The glaucoma and vision loss are very likely playing into his separation anxiety. Try giving him one of your tshirts (one with no tags) that you have worn. The scent will probably comfort him, like your bedding. Give him a smaller area, maybe one room, to be in while you are gone. Sometimes dogs get anxious if they feel they have to "guard" the whole house. Smaller areas can be comforting in many cases. This may be particularly helpful for a dog with vision loss. Don't make a big fuss when you leave or return. Be matter of fact, and tell him you will return shortly. Try to tire him out with his favorite activity before you have to leave him. He will be more likely to sleep while you are gone.

| Forgot to add one more: Use keywords or phrases like "I'll be right back" or "I'll be back soon" for longer outings. When possible, do some exercises where you leave for short periods, 5-10 minutes, and return. Gradually increase the length of time you are gone.

Yorkie Talker | He went out to eat tonight, I had just washed the bedding so I left both mine and my husbands work shirts we had worn today, on the bed and he was so busy licking them he hardly noticed we left. And I closed off the hallway with a pet gate so he had access to just our room, the bathroom and the guest bedroom. When we got home he was fast asleep on our clothes and didn't notice we were home until he heard me pouring food into his bowl, he did jump around a bit, but didn't cry loud like he usually does. Thanks so much, I won't feel as bad leaving him home alone for even just a little while.
