| Help! Yorkie with itchy, hot skin! I just found this site and I'm glad I did! This has been very helpful thus far, but I have a specific question. My little 4 yr old Toby has been itching for quite some time now. At first we were told it was dry skin, so we used a medicated shampoo. Then we were told flea allergies. We have used flea collars, flea spray, frontline, pet armor, capstar, sentinel, and flea shampoo. We have no carpet - hardwood, concrete, and tile only! We used a flea spray on the bed and couches, and we had our backyard professionally sprayed twice. Even after treatment, he would still itch immediately afterwards. No relief. He scratches his sides and his stomach and his ears. He licks his paws constantly. He bites around his tail. CONSTANTLY. I will be changing his diet today. He was on IAMS, but I am going to try something more natural. Any ideas at all? |

| We have an allergic to everything wheaten terrier that is now doing quite well on Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream( no chicken-grain free!). We limit her exposure to lawn chemicals as much as possible and rinse her feet after walks. We use only nonchemical natural shampoo (minksheen)and rinse her with cool water in between weekly baths if necessary. My vet is working with me on limiting her vaccinations. She has not scratched her ears raw in over 6 months! |

| I have found t-gel shampoo helps. Adding fish oild-- salmon oils -- to foods is great There are a few threads about using apple cider vingar (organic) is also helpful, adding to food, water and as a rinsh after bath. The main thing is food -- Iams is not the best choice in my opnion. You want grain free -- no corn!!! Ask the vet if you can give bendryl to help until the food and other treatments take effect

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Are they sure it's flea allergies? Bc this doesn't sound right to me, poor little kiddo. There is a thread in the library about how to approach any kind of allergy and it may help .

| I apologize in advance. I'm a bit long-winded Biscuit used to scratch ALL the time. Sometimes he would stay awake at night biting his paws. He scratched so much he had recurring skin infections. The vets successfully treated the skin and ear infections but they were only temporary fixes. They recommended Hill's Science Diet specifically for allergies and sensitivity but we didn't see much improvement. So, what did we do? We got rid of our carpeting/rugs and switched him to Natural Balance Limited Ingredients. He doesn't go out much because it's really hot and humid where we live. If he does go out, we wipe his paws and try to limit his time on the grass. He responded very well to Natural Balance so that's what I feel most confident giving him. We had to start feeding him Hill's Science Diet recently and his itching/biting came back, although not as severe. I think corn is the culprit. So, short summary of what worked for Biscuit: higher quality food with no corn or chicken, no carpet or rugs, and limited time outside. We also tried fish oils for some time. I hope you're able to find a solution for Toby soon

| Thank you everyone for the advice. I will be trying minksheen to see if that helps. I will also look at that thread on allergies. I have given him benadryl and it basically does nothing. I myself take Hydroxyzine, and my vet told me the appropriate amount and that did nothing as well. I'll keep you posted on my progress! |

I like you had the shots from the vet and it was short lived solution. I also think the use of salmon oil and/or acv helps.
