Ok, I need help Giving my baby a Pill! Hi gang, this is the deal I have one of those expensive Comfortis chewable pills to give Gizmo. I tried putting it in a piece of sausage, crushing it and putting it in a spoon of spehgetti'o's, sticking it in a piece of fruit, cheese...you name it he spit it out...I got one pill left, I have to figure out a way to get this into him....any other ideas, if he does not eat this one I have to buy more and they are 16 dollars a pill. Cynthia:confused::confuse2: |
I like to use cream cheese. Works every time for me with my three. I think it hides any bitter taste of the pill. |
I have luck with peanut butter, the chunky kind. |
Drop it on the floor and tell him not to eat that! Chewables are supposed to taste good. Sometimes I'll put it on the teeth in the back of the mouth and make them bite it, sometimes they will eat it sometimes they spit it out. Or I use chicken baby food (just meat) give a taste first, maybe twice, then hide the pill in about a half of a teaspoonful, and while he's doing whatever with that, get another dollup ready for him as a chaser. Except then he may swallow instead of chew, and that wouldn't be good. Dip it in Peanut Butter, then pretend you're eating it, then offer him some. |
I put Sammy's pills in a little dab of peanut butter. |
ok, I think I got cream cheese and peanut butter in there keep your fingers crossed....I knew to come here and ask you guys rock!!!!! CYNTHIA |

I used lowfat cottage cheese and put Max's pill right on top. He started taking another pill too, yesterday and that one I just put directly in his mouth, hold it shut, blow gently in his nose and rub his neck. Voila it's gone! I'm not sure if the blowing in his face does anything but I could swear I read that somewhere! |
i use greenies pill pockets. I don't use a whole one/ I just tear enough to cover the pill and roll it up in a ball and they take it just fine |
I wrap pills in cheese, give it to Jackson, then gently hold his mouth close. No choice but to swallow it :) |
I always put Sasha's rolled up in a little bit of cheese, chicken, peanut butter, etc. and put it in her food bowl with her other food. She would usually just gobble it up with all the other food without realizing she had taken her meds. This worked good with her heartworm and thyroid pills but I have to admit that she would not touch her antibiotics when she was ill before she passed away. When she stopped refusing something with cheddar cheese ( her favorite) I knew something was seriously wrong. I called my vet and he recommended marshmallow creme but she still refused:cry: |
Four ideas on how to give a pet a pill. 1.I think the easiest is cheese rolled into balls I give one or two without a pill, then sneek in the one with the pill. 2. Tip their head back, slide pill along teeth, to the back of the tongue. If you put it far enough on back of tongue, they will swallow it. 3. Use pill pockets purchased from the Vet. 4. Place pill as far back on tongue as you can. Gently hold mouth shut and blow into dogs face, this makes them gulp and swallow. |
Ok, He spit out the cream cheese and the peanut butter, meaning the one with the pill, as long as either did not have the pill he ate it just fine....sigh...gotta go buy another expensive pill as I have ruined the 2 I had.........geez.......sigh just laughing at myself for not being able to trick this little monster....lol Cynthia |
You could tilt his head up, gently open his jaws, drop the pill to the back of his throat, close his mouth and hold it closed until he sticks his tongue out (means he's swallowed). Hold the top jaw with your thumb and middle or first fingers, hold the pill in the other hand between your thumb and first finger, then with your ring finger, gently pry open his mouth, then without letting go, move the pill over his open mouth and drop it in, and hold his mouth closed till you see his tongue stick out. I would just reuse the same pill until he gets it. As it's a chewable, it doesn't matter what shape it's in. My Sapphire is a junky. She loves medicine, I always have to push her away to give Tink her meds. Don't have a clue why, I've only had her on meds twice in 2 years. If Tink spits out some of her Lactulose, Sapphire will lick it off her beard. What characters! |
Butter or blender with chicken I've always just dabbed a little butter onto pills, and my two have eaten them up! But putting them on the back of the tounge and holding the mouth closed will work... It just kind of sucks to have to do it, especially if he struggles. :( If you do try the butter, don't reenact the same routine you've had. Change rooms, act like you're eating it, put it in his bowl and leave it there for him to find... Whatever you have been doing, mix it up! He's got you pegged, so if you keep the same routine (like sitting on the kitchen floor begging him to take it, like I did the first time :)) you'll never get it down there! Also, is there maybe another brand you could try, since you say you have to buy new pills anyway? (Although I am completely with the person above who says just reuse the squished ones!) You could also try crunching the pill up n a mixer and blending it with some cooked chicken breast. Serve it as a treat. He'll eat all of it then, for sure! :D |
I give Teddy his pill in a small piece of low sodium mozzarella cheese - it's the only think that has worked for us. |

I crush them up and mix them in with a little nutritcal and then use a baby spoon to feed it to them. |
when ever we give any of our dogs pills (we have a 17 year old male scottish terrier/jack russell cross, a 8 year old spinger spaniel/border collie cross and my 1 year 6 month old yorkie female) we give them dolly mixture sweets. they know that they arent allowed them and that they are a rare treat and they go nuts for them. we push the pill inside one of the squishy sweets and give that to them first so they cant tell its different to the others and then we give them 2 more normal sweets so they think its just a treat. works every time with all three and they wolf them down!! :D |
I have good luck with braunsweiger, liver sausage. I give a few bites of it without anything in it and then slip in the bite with the pill and offer another bite quickly to encourage swallowing to get the next bite. You can crush the pill, also. The liver sausage has a very strong smell and taste, so it works for me. Jeanette |
Well, I thank all of you for the suggestions, all of them great ideas, but after having waisted this expensive medicine already I am heading to the vet this morning to let them do it as I just cannot afford to loose my last pill at 16 dollars a pill. Just fed Gizmo so he would have a full stomach and off we go. Cannot believe this little runt out foxed me....boy if it had been any human that made me waist this expensive medicine I would have punched them in the face....(sounds violent huh....lmao).....:confuse2::teethysmi |
I stick Coco's in a slice of hot dog. She basically just inhales it:) Then if we have the pill pockets, those work too. You can get the Greenies pill pockets at the pet store, you basically put the pill in in and pinch the end, making a tiny "pocket" with a pill inside:D |

Riley is the SAME Way!!!! I had to give him clavamox day and night for 14-days and it was the hardest thing!!!! Whatever I did would "Maybe" work the first time, but then he knew..... I ended up preping the pill the night before...wrapping it in a teeny piece of a pill pocket.... I would then just randomly start having him do tricks... the first couple i would just give him a teeny piece of the pill picket and by maybe the third trick, I would give him the teeny piece that had the pill in it. That would usually end up working. and would just start doing tricks with him... The first couple |
Charlie takes quite a few different pills but if I try to hide them in food he eats the food and then spits the pill out as if to say ha ha ha so I got a syringe without a needle on it and I crush the pills, I take the plunger out and put the crushed pills in and then fill the syringe some with milk not allot just enough to make it flow easy. I then get Charlie and open his mouth and shoot the mixture to the back of his throat. Now dont get me wrong he KNOWS whats coming soon as he sees me crushing pills and he isnt thrilled but he does get his meds like he should. |

Finger in the throat, several times if need be. If it's a too big, I coat it in sweet potato or something. |
Cheese has never failed me! |
I also use Greenie Pill Pockets, I break into thirds roll the pill in one of the balls and "train" them into her by giving her the ball with the pill second. Sophie Kate is HORRIBLE at taking bills, the girl can suck the cheese off a pill and spit it back at you (seriously). |
Well they simply put it way back in his throat like someone already suggested then held his mouth shut while rubbing his throat and whalla...down it went.,.,.as all the vets laughed at the fact that Gimo out-foxed me......I like the suggestion of putting it in the syringe with liquid.
