				   | I read the following and thought I'd share it...obviously just a small segment of the article: ConsumerLab also tested several pet supplements, one of which, Pet-Tabs Complete Daily Vitamin Mineral Supplement for Dogs contained lead at unhealthy levels.

				   | I have read the same about supplements for humans. In my non-expert opinion, supplements are unnecessary if the dog is being fed a complete and balanced diet. The only supplements I would consider giving would be at the direction of my vet.

				   | I don't give supplements either (other than a high calorie one for the times they need it)...but I know many do so when I ran across that I thought I'd post it for those interested.

				   | Unfortunately, the food supplement business is a billion dollar business that goes unregulated. Noone checks to make sure they are what they claim they are, and unfortunately ppl take advantage to join the billion dollar business. My mother uses a lot of supplements. I had a friend of mine who was a pharmacist check what was in the bottle of some "natural cold remedy" sold that my mother was using. It was basically all "filler" in the capsule. I'm sure there are some good ones out there who do contain what they say they contain; however, I'm always skeptical.

				   | Thanks for posting this. I just recently also learned that in order for some vitamins/minerals to be absorbed they must also be taken with others. Like I had to take my old iron supplement with vit c for absorption to be maximized. I do not know if this is the same with dogs. As Maximo stated above, when giving supplements I think it should be at the suggestion of a vet or nutritionalist so one can get all the information they need to properly administer them. |
