| Cesars dew claws So I took Cesar in for his nail trimming and was told that he has a dew claw that is growing abnormally and that I need to keep an eye on it and it needs to be trimmed more often than his other nails because those nails grow quickly and do not come into contact with the ground. Well, I just got back from his nail clipping and this claw still looks pretty long. I asked if this was as short as they could go and they said yes. It's not so much long as it is circular. The other dew claw grows like his other claws and is not as bad, but this one is still close to the soft spot of the paw and is very curled. It looks like within a couple weeks it will be back into contact with his paw. I called the vet about removal and they said that they don't do it. What do you guys do about this claw? Should I keep looking for somebody to remove it? I don't want him to get an infection if this ever slips my mind. |

| Some vets don't do it as a "cosmetic" procedure along with tail docking. If it's posing a health problem, any vet should do it. Is it bothering him? That does look really long. They might be able to quickly knock him out and at least trim it really short. I wouldn't remove it unless it's absolutely necessary. I would find a vet to take a look though. That could easily poke into and irritate teh pad. Have you tried clipping tiny bits off 1-2 times a week? Or filing it down? I'd start there if you haven't already tried.

I haven't tried filing it down or anything. I don't want to do anything that's going to hurt him or make it worse. Maybe this isn't a common thing. | |

The dewclaw nail can only be cut so much each week without cutting the quick, if you take him in for weekly trimmings, the quick will eventually recede and you can keep it shorter. Dogs file their paw nails by walking, but the dewclaw never gets filed, so it’s very important for pet owners to keep it trimmed, as it can grow in a circle and into their skin. I always encourage people to support breeders who understand the importance of removing the dewclaws when they are young.

| Unless there is something wrong with the nail (split, broke, etc.), filing a few times a week won't hurt. Just take it slow and try not to hit the quick (which is definitely not the end of the world).
