Senior Yorkie Talker | We do have a lot of animals right now. We are like the Brady Bunch right now. I brought my two dogs, cat, and parrot. They have three big dogs, and two cats. One of their cats is very old. Around 13 or 14. So putting her food up high isn't an option unfortunatley. She has trouble jumping. After feeding them today they haven't been hungry and haven't eaten the other food or cat food. I had Bentley on Solid Gold Wee Bits but I figured it wasn't for my doxie and wanted them on the same food. I think ill stick with the Natural Choice and feed on a schedule and make sure to get my doxie out for walks more. The breed is prone to getting slipped discs in their spine when they are overweight. If I can get control of the situation I know it won't be long until he is his normal slim healthy weight. When I adopted him he was slightly overweight. Then we got him down to a healthy weight by schedule feeding. My family loves their dogs but they are very misinformed about some things. Don't even get me started on them not thinking heartworm meds are that important (in Louisiana...in the summer!). Grrr..... |

Yorkie Talker | Honey, ive been in your EXACT same siuation, my hubby just got home from deployment monday, so i understand. But what you need to do is let your family know your dogs are on a schedule and encourage them to place their pets on one as well, personally i like breed specific formulas cause they are catered to your pups needs. Don't go buy cheap crap dog food that is semi-moist and has a lot of sugar, it will make your baby fat and have dental problems. Try feeding in a different room than the other animals and honestly if all else fails, put your foot down and make your family feed their dogs when yours needs feeding. Also, even when your hubby is deployed try and stay home, dont just go home on a whim cause that creates stress on your dog, and especially changing food.

| I know how you feel to some extent. I had to move home once and the family's yellow lab was getting older and having arthritis and was over weight. The family was feeding her table scraps after meals she was like the doggy garbage disposal. I took her to the vet and got her on a prescription food to help her lose weight. I felt so bad for her because carrying that extra weight was causing more pain for her. Anyway when I moved back out they went back to feeding her the way they wanted to. She gained weight again and lived out her days overweight and with painful movement. It was heart breaking for me. There isn't much you can do when you are in the home of someone else if they don't understand or care about how you feel. Make friends with other wives when your hubby comes home and keep your own place when he has to go again. It''s the only way you can feed you dogs the way you want to. |

| I personally would not feed IAMS as they were busted back in 06 for animal cruelty.I can even give you a link to the video if you want. I feed My German Shepherd, Yorkie, and my yokie/poodle Canidae. It is a all life stages and can be fed to puppies as well as seniors... It makes like so much easier when they can all eat the same thing. Good Luck.

| As a side issue. When my Shih Tzu was getting older I had him on Science Diet for mature dogs. I just read the ingredient list for that food and almost got sick. The first ingredient was corn! What followed was not much better. I feel so bad for feeding cow food to my poor baby. |

Senior Yorkie Talker | I just left Bentleys training class and have read good things about Innova and that some pciky eaters like it. So I picked up a bag of the small bites. I looked it up and like every other food I think is good there seems to be concern about P&G taking it over. So of course now I'm worried about that. I think I'm going to stick with it though bc they seem to like it a lot and haven't touched the other dogs food. I can't convince my family to feed better food and I can't buy food for their big guys if they insist on dumping the entire bag in the bowl at night. So my best bet here is to find a food mine really enjoy that's a good food and seperate them to eat. The last few days it has worked and we don't have much longer until we will b headed back to San Diego and be in our own home again with just our pups. I am concerned about the things I read about Innova but at the same time I read the ingredients and they seemed great. I have been wanting to switch from Solid Gold simply bc Petsmart is much closer than Petco even in San Diego. So I guess this was just a good reason to switch. Neither of my boys seemed to really enjoy it. I know Bentley hasn't been sneaking any extra but my doxie sometimes gets by me. I've kept a close eye on him tho and am hoping to see him slim down to a healthier weight. Bentley could honestly stand to gain a few. He's so short and stalky everyone thinks he's about 2lbs but he's actually closer to 5. And even at 5 sometimes I worry he's too skinny. Especially when we are in a training class with dogs that weigh in around 100-150lbs. He thinks he is that big so I really have some trouble with him sometimes wanting to rough house with the others. Anyways, I'm off subject here. I want to thank everyone for all your help. Its nice to have a place to go and people to talk to that understand and who consider their animals a part of the family. To my amazement a lot of people actually do not see them that way. I have learned so much from this site and am truly grateful for the help and support I get here. I feel like I have a whole site full of friends which really helps me when I'm having a bad day or having a "military wife pity party" for myself. Looking at pictures of everyones little yorkies and relating to other' concerns helps get me out of that bad mood. And I'm sure I'm not the only one. A long thank you I know. |
