There were heartworm positive dogs in every state.
Year-round preventatives with annual testing are strongly recommended.

I just got my two Shih Tzu's Checked for Heartworms and they tested negative. Another supply of 6 month Heartgard. Still need to get little Yorkie Wiley checked as well.

I live in MN and the vets only recommend 6 month protection. I wonder if that might have to do with the cold months.

That was the trent in MI too until pups that weren't treated in the winter started coming up HW+. Now it's the recommendation to do it year-round in most or all states. Cold weather is why some vets say just do it for part of the year, but it isn't the safest...

I would be scared to death not to use a preventative year round. Of course we live in the south. Thanks for the link to that article,it was very informative.

Thanks! Great Article! I am trying to decide whether to give my Ziva, who has experienced liver issues HW meds - incidence rate is an important factor in helping me decide.

A pup would need to be severely liver compromised (close to death) to not give them. Because if your pup does get heartworm, treatment of choice is Immiticide therapy (arsenic compound injections). At the least, slow kill with Heartgard would be done (which is rarely recommended). Unless the vet has said it's too risky, it's very important to give it.

BTW, my dog is liver compromised also.

Living in Florida the "gang" is on H/W year round. Do not know about the cold months lowering H/W incidence, see Gemy"s thread about her Zoey getting H/W and they live in a colder/cooler climate.

My dogs have been on year round heartworm preventative since they invented it. Am too scared not to give it.

I never will understand why people don't use HW preventative- it is such a cheap little pill to prevent such a terrible disease.

I have always given HW meds year round here in Michigan because if I travel, at any time during the year, I take my pup with me.

Thanks for posting the article, it's always a wake up for me when I can read something like that.
I was one to take Princess off Interceptor for the winter & the vet seemed fine with it, just recently sent me something to have her tested & the meds restarted. Once she's back on them it will be for good this time! And I think the pill is only $7-$8 if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the link... definitely doing it year round here as I personally saw live mosquitoes flying around in my yard last winter. It was 17 degrees F outside and snow on the ground. Never saw an insect outside in the cold like that ever!

Well, I am not taking any chances anymore either!!! I am glad my two Shih Tzu's tested negative and I have started them on their 6month supply of Heartgard, but I am going to go back in and purchase for year round. Is there a difference in the pill? I keep hearing about the (PILL) for Heart Worms and we are given Heartgard which is a chunk of ? not a pill, but maybe this is what everyone refers to as a Pill.
