Distemper/Parvo Vacc. 1yr. VS 3yr.?

Princess has to get her Distemper/Parvo booster & I called the vet for the price. I didn't know they had a 3 year vaccine available & it's only $10 more than the one year. Of course it would make sense from a financial standpoint, but is it safe for a yorkie to get one that's going to last that long?

Princess seems to have put on some weight (healthy amount as I could feel her spine after her spay) and I believe she's 7.5ish pounds right now, she's 16 months old.

DHP should be given when they are pups and then one year later. After that, the schedule varies quite a bit between vets. After the one year, this vaccine is just not needed yearly. That was the old way of doing things. Giving it every three years is the new recommendation (AAHA, AVMA, most or all vet schools say to do it this way). There is strong evidence that suggests after the one year booster, they technially never need DHP again. However, most find that a little extreme and opt to go the every three year route.

There may be some companies that label their DHP vaccines as one year or three year. In reality, the one year vaccine lasts for at least three years and probably MUCH longer. It's almost certainly the same or a very similar vaccine. In short, the vet is either really technical with getting vaccines labeled 1 or 3 years even if that's not necessary or they are playing a game.

The one year DHP is all that is needed and that is good for at least 3 years. The 3 year is probably similar or the same, so it won't hurt to get it. However, if the 1 year vaccine is recombinant, there may be some concerns about giving it less often.

I'd get the 3 year and give it no more than every 3 years.

When I was working at the Vet's, the 3 year had just come into effect. We used the same vaccine, it's just that after the puppy vaccines throughout the first year, the dog's immunity is established (hopefully) and only the rules were changed as to how often to booster that immunity, from every year to every 3 years.

Some vets increase their prices on the so-called "three year vaccine" because many folks won't see the vet until the vaccines are due, so they lose out on the 2nd and 3rd year office visit fees, as the dog is not due till the end of the 3rd year. Most vets do recommend at least yearly "well-check" exams, to head off any obvious potential problems with the pet, but I'm sure many owners don't see a vet unless their dog is having problems or is due for a vaccine.

So I do agree, get the 3 year vaccine (DHPP) and if the dog is due a 3 year Rabies, schedule them at least month apart. But do have a yearly exam if, by chance, your dog has not had a need during the year to see the vet.

Thanks. Yes, she'll still be going in for a check up as well as a possible dental. I'm not sure when we'll do that...she has two retained teeth, but her adult teeth look great so I don't know if it's ok to leave the baby teeth in there until it's more "worthwhile" to clean the others & put her under.

I'll see what they say when she goes in. Plus I just like to get the clean bill of health hopefully & getting her weight to see if she's made up her mind yet. She'll have to get her rabies anyways (next year), as the H.S. gave her the one year with her spay.

Ya I agree, there's no difference between a "3 yr." and a "1 yr" as far as what's in the vaccine. Lol, you're vet's just probably trying to make up for that income loss for the owners that choose every 3 years, the vaccine isn't costing him any more to buy unless maybe he's using a different "brand" for the ones labeled 3 yr. It's the same price at my vet - they just do a quick education with the owners and help them decide which way to go based on the dog's exposure level (they're a bit new to me and that's just what I was told when I said I insist on only doing every 3 years).

From what my regular vet told me is you can either get the one year or the three year rabies, and then you'll get the tag of proof for whichever to show if ever needed, but it needs to be given annually or the 3 year vaccine every three years.
I didn't look to see if you are from here, do you have reason to believe differently? If I don't have to give her it I'd rather not, but wouldn't want to risk the worst either if God forbid, she ever bit anyone.

The rabies labeling system is somewhat of a game. In the case of Pfizer's Defensor I and Defensor III, it's the same vaccines labelled different to satisfy different state requirements. Some companies make actually make two different vaccines, but apparently at least Pfizer doesn't.

The vaccine used is pu on the certificate. If the vet used a vaccine labelled for 1 year use (even if it will technically last 3 years), it has to be given the next year. Then though, you can give the 3 year.

Michigan is a 3 year state. Puppy rabies, then one year booster, then every 3 years.

Ok, thanks. I do remember talking to you about this a while back, but guess I was still under the impression it had to be documented as "good for" every year. I would've gotten the 3 year this year, but the Humane Society was offering it for $10 I believe so I just did it with her spay.
