HELP - What can I hide Teddy's pills in? Teddy needs his epilepsy medicine every 12 hours for the rest of his life and he is only 2. At first, he ate the capsule out of my hand, and although it took him a while, he finally has me figured out. Lately, he's been crafty with the pill. Just when I think he has swallowed it, I notice a white capsule stuck in his beard or in the corner of his lip or he plainly spits it out. I've tried peanut butter, cottage cheese, fruits, potatoes, and hiding it in his food. He eats around it. I've heard someone swear by strudel and someone else by cream cheese of the brick variety. I'm looking for other ideas on how to hide the pill. What works EVERY TIME? |

Have you tried pill pockets? Since the pill is literally in the center of a "treat" they usually cannot pick it out. |
I wrap the pill in cheese, give it to Jackson, and gently hold his mouth closed until he swallows. :) He also used to try the spitting it out thing so I solved the problem by holding his mouth, LOL. |
Pill pockets are the only thing that seems to work for me. She finds it in everything else. |
What a smart little guy you have there :D My last yorkie used to spit out the pills too...we tried everything. Finally, I asked my vet to show me how she does it....I used to put the pill on the tip of my finger, open his mouth and then put my finger with the pill along the side of his gum till I got to the end of his teeth and pushed it in....sounds brutal, but it was actually easier than it sounds...and it didn't make him gag or anything. It was the only way he would take his meds. |
GREENIES® Pill Pockets® treats for dogs Here's the link so you can see what the pill pockets look like. Petco and many other pet stores sell them:) I'm pretty sure there are other brands that make something similar too if you don't like Greenies brand. |
My boys don't like their Sentinel, so I have to hide it. I've tried cheese and peanut butter, and those never worked for us, they always spit them out. I tried the Gerber chicken baby food (no onion or garlic), and that workes for my 2. I just give them each a spoon of the baby food with the pill in the front/middle, and they always lick it right up :) |

Pill gun or your finger... |
Smart little stinkers, aren't they. When all else fails, you can be the mean mommy and just force it down. I had to do this when I had to give the girls pain meds after spay. Now, when I give their Comfortis, I rattle the cookie bag and slip it in in all the excitement. (but they are very small) |
I used to crush up the pills and mix a little honey in with them. I don't know if you can crush your meds or open the capsule. |

Chloe is the same way, she figured out how to spit her pill out and she would pick it out of all the things that normally work, cheese, cream cheese, PB, yogurt, etc. She also needs her meds for the rest of her life. I have taken to just putting it down her throat plain and holding her mouth until she swallows- like you would pill a cat. It really is not pleasant but the only thing that works every time and she HAS to have her meds. Have you looked into a compounding pharmacy to see if they could make it into a liquid? My vet recommended Wedgewood- but they don't deal with the chemical Chloe needs. |
if food doesn't work I just pill them with my finger. the trick is to get it as far back as possible by literally sticking your finger almost down their throat. this way they can't spit it back out. you have to get it past a certain point of their tongue otherwise they can flick it out. |
For Princess to take her Interceptor I have to crush her pill & "pick it up" with a little dollop of sour cream on my finger. She licks it right off every time. I think the smell helps disguise it, I don't know, but it works for us!:) |
pill pockets! they are simply the best thing on earth!! |
I use the low fat cream cheese and have never had a problem. He sure is a smart little stinker. |
I agree, pill pockets are the best thing invented since cotton candy. They work like a charm. |

Word of caution on animal medications .....word of caution on crushing or opening capsules of meds...if the medication is in capsule form for time release, you don't want to open it and give it to your baby all at once. They end up getting a "sudden" dose of medication instead of being released over a period of time. With a tablet being crushed, same thing could happen. If the tablet is coated, it may work on time release too. I made this mistake a few years ago. My Lucy wouldn't take her medicine so I crushed the tablet and put it in her food. I told my vet what I did...he said I could have killed her ! The type of medicine she was taking wasn't meant to be ingested all at once, it was a coated tablet that was to be released into her system slowly... |
I feel for you as I did the all the foods to hide their glucosamine tablets. Each would work for a bit and then nothing. Thankfully, the vet turned us on to soft chews of Dasuquin, now they take that as a treat. When I had to pill my cats, I used a pill-er. I have see it at Petsmart. It's a long tube that you put the pill on the end and you can put it way back into their mouth and deposit it. I would deposit the pill, hold their mouth closed and then blow gently into their face. Worked everytime. |

I think it's important to check how the pill should be ingested as it could be dangerous either way, either a rush of too much at once, or never getting the full benefit of the product if not chewed properly. |

My Vet gives me a pill pocket to keep Riley distracted when she gives him his shots. |
Thanks everyone! I'm going to give the babyfood a try. I know pill pockets work, but I'm not a fan of using them and would opt for a more natural way. I also think Teddy would flip out if I tried to force it down his throat. He is very easily spooked due to his disabilities and I don't want to impeded his trust by doing anything to him that he himself does not want to do of his own freedom. |
I've always wrapped it in a bit of American (sandwich) cheese. Seems to do the trick. Also I have had to hold the mouth closed to make sure they swallowed. But the cheese is the best method I have found. Good Luck |
I've always used cheese with great success. Feed one lil bit of cheese, 2nd bit has pill in it, then 3rd bit of cheese. My pups have never known they've had a pill. |
I buy greenies pill pockets for my dogs. So far they have worked out as an awesome training treat for Teddie, and he seems to be addicted to the two flavors...(beef and duck). They are mushy like the consistency of fresh baked brownies and have a hole in the center that you can hide a pill. (I use these for my uber intelligent lab who hates pills) They also have a variety for dogs with allergies. Hope something like this helps you out like it does me. :) Here's a link to them online... http://www.greenies.com/en_US/Produc...cid=paidsearch |
