Ear Health and Hygiene We have been cleaning our Yorkie's ears out weekly with Q-tips dipped in a little alcohol and pulling out a lot of dark brown junk. Just wondering if he is scratching so hard at something? and causing his ears to bleed or if this is just normal wax build up. Also wondering what others use to clean out ears. Mineral oil? Other over the counter cleaners that are for ears? Gracias! Samc

Hi Samc! My baby had the same thing and the vet gave me some ear drops to take care of the problem. I would take my baby to the vet too make sure it's nothing more serious.

OMG..i was sure i answered...i must be going nuts:P Well, i would recomend you buy a cleaning solution specially made for dogs, you can do so at at pet store or even at some supermarkets that have a pet product section...I am not sure if the alcohol would irritate the skin. Also the cleaner reaches deeper inside the ar canal making sure it is always clean. I clean Mojo's ears after every bath (usually every 7 to 10 days) and there is hardly ever any wax...so if there is excessive wax and residue check with you vet, it could be a little infection, it is always good to be on the safe side Hope it helped!

If your yorkie is scratching alot at his ears and the stuff you're getting out is dark brown, it could be ear mites. If cleaning the ears don't work with the cleaner that Babbie was talking about, then you may have to go to the vet for mite medicine. I know I've had dogs in the past the ear mites and they have had the really brown waxy stuff and scratch at their ears alot. Hope this helps Cyndie and Trevor

| Do the ears smell? Usually if it is infected it will also have an odor and also be sensitive - does it seem to hurt him when you are cleaning them? Alcohol can be very drying to skin if used alot so I would hold off on using it. Good luck.

There is an odor but when he is getting his ears cleaned he seems to actually like it as though it feels good. He never moves or fusses. We will stop the alcohol and see if there is some over the counter stuff specifically for ears that we might use between now and next week when we see the vet. Thank you very much for your consideration and reply. Samc

I agree with the previous answer , lots of scratching and brown junk usually means ear mites. ALthough there are some over-the counter meds for ear mites what you get from the vet is generally better.

I clean Archie's ears with an ear powder. I just put it in his ears, and watch him go nuts running all over the house. He did scratch a lot when we first got him and it turned out to be ear mites. The vet gave us a solution to put in his ear, which we had to do for a week or so.

Kai just had this problem , It turned out to be ear mites , the Vet gave me some ear drops and also told me it is very importiant to clean her ears with every bath , I asked him to show me how to do it and he was very nice about it , He said to make sure you use a very gentle cleaner , yorkies ears are prone to infection because of the freuqent bathing and the hair in the ears. I bought ear cleaner at the vet's office and now I just put it in her ears after a bath (how the vet showed me to of course) and wipe her ears out with a cooton ball afterwards. I noticed Kai's ears had lots of black icky stuff when we started taping them , and it turned out that she had ear mites! Good Luck :-)

My dog Gracie has brown waxy stuff that comes out of her everytime I clean them . I finally went to the doctor today and he said it was either an allergy or infection..he gave me a solution to put in her ears and we will see in 10 days if it goes away if not its allergies.

I took Bailey in this morning to have lots of stuff done. The Vet is going to clean out his ears and run some tests on the gunk that comes out to help determine what is going on. He doubts mites, but could be yeast or allergy. He is also getting his ears flushed out. Let us know how yours works out. Thanks, Samc

My vet seemed to think it could be an allergy....maybe from Gracie's food but he wanted to give me a solution to put in her ear and see if that cleared it up otherwise the second option was allergies. So far she has been on Otomax which didnt work because it was an acid...so he put her on a "base" ear solution and said some dogs need an acid and some need a base if neither work then we go from there. So far today no itching!!!! Gosh I hope she doesnt have allergies! I will let you know how it goes in 10 days lol! Keep us posted on your Yorkie too I would love to know if they came up with a solution!
