This is right. If it's much more than a year between, it is treated as if the dog has never been vaccinated before (because the last vaccine is no longer effective). And newly vaccinated dogs get 2 leptos...

I don't get the lepto shot, and I hope I never will have to - bc I think the risks of it are much higher than most shots.

If he had a true allergic reaction, I personally would not get it. I'd also want to know the incidence and prevalence of lepto in the area, just so I could weigh that as well.

The breeder said he threw up several times, had the dry heaves a lot, but not enough to catch the interest of the vet to say it was a "reaction" to the vaccine. She also said he was lethargic for two days and didn't eat, and was sore in his hind quarters for days...yelped when you even grazed where the shot was given. Looking at the list of allergic reactions online, he didn't have the full spectrum of any of them...but he did touch on several of them and have a hard time for a few days before he started coming out of it.

Thank you all soooo much for your replies and insight. This is a tough one, considering I do know that his last set of shots on the 31st is when they want to give him his second lepto shot. I will discuss this with his vet and see just how necessary she thinks it is. She specializes in toy breeds/yorkies so I am hoping she is honest with me on this. I will also consult with my other dogs vet as he is honest to a fault...he knows we back up to a farm and he has NEVER advised us to give the other 3 dogs the shot. I hate tough decisions like this one, but it helps so much to hear everyone's stories and thoughts. I'm going to jot down a few of the things I have read here and ask specific questions at his appointment before they touch Teddie. I've waited a long time to get my little buddy, so I want to ensure I get this decision right.

I guess it depends on the list of vaccines that were given that day (can't be completely sure it was lepto that caused this). But given this information, I would consider it a reaction and personally would very likely opt out (JMO only).

Just thought I'd update the thread. Apparently when I talked to the vet today, and told her of Teddie's reaction of dry heaves to the lepto shot that was enough of a reaction for her to say she wouldn't risk giving him a second shot. So...Teddie got his regular shots today, last of the bunch until he's a year, and he is a perfect 6 pounds 1 ounce.
