| Question on amount of canned food I posted in my other thread, but as that thread was about Wellness 95%, I thought I would repost the question here. I am feeding Pocket the regular Wellness canned food. The cans are 12.5ozs, the directions are 1 can per day for dogs up to 15lbs. Pocket is only 6 lbs 3 ozs, and I am feeding him 3 times a day - 2ozs each time. He cleans his bowl. Am I giving him enough? I don't want to overfeed him but I certainly don't want to underfeed him either. I am not used to canned food and I free feed Beamer and Lil Bit.

| I rarely use canned food. When I do, for an average size like him, I usually give 1/4 can twice/day. Then I just watch the weight and adjust as needed. Hope that helps.

| Well gee, I just reread your post...it is the same as what you are doing. I just feed twice/day. Maybe give him a tad bit more? See if he gains weight. Some will keep eating and acting like they are starving no matter what you feed them. haha

| I have to feed him canned. When he was seized from the puppy mill he only had three teeth and the vet had to pull them, so the poor thing hasn't a tooth in his head. He is malnourished as most of the dogs were that were seized (Polk County took 184 dogs and 2 cats from these people). He would probably eat more if I put more down for him but I don't want to overfeed him. I thought three 2oz meals a day which is almost half the can. I'll add a little more to each meal to make it up to 1/2 the can a day. I am also not used to canned food, but I doubt he could handle dry food. Thank you so much for your help

| You really could feed him kibble after you have soaked it a bit with a bit of water. I bet he is happy to be with you! Poor little guy. Bless you for taking such good care of him.

He probably had to fight with the other dogs to get any food before he was rescued. He seems content, but as he was cleaning his bowl I wanted to make sure I was giving him enough. Would feeding him twice a day be better? I put his antibiotic in the morning feed and in the last feed. He has several more days of the antibiotics.

| I don't think it matters how many times you feed him. Whatever works for you! If he is that malnourished 3 times might actually be better...smaller amounts each time.

BTW Polk County are going to be performing "rescue inspections", they are contacting the rescue groups in Polk County and getting a list of their foster homes and check them out to verify all dogs in the home are vaccinated, well cared for and not living in poor conditions. They will check for safe structure, access to fresh food and water, the absence of bugs, and well groomed/clean pets. They are not checking for housekeeping, except to make sure the house is not filled with dirt and filth. I wish Brevard county would do the same.

| That would be heavenly if it were. Thanks for your help Linda - I'm heading for bed now. Oh - before I forget, a friend on another forum saw the video about this puppy mill and commented on the adoption fee. Said the shelters there (she is in College Station, TX) only charge $40. I gave her the link to your website where you explain why rescue groups are more expensive than shelters. I am hoping she will donate to YHR.

| A 6 pound underweight Yorkie would probably need 200 calories a day give or take. I'd probably do 225 or 250 and see how that goes. If he is very, very skinny, you may need to up that a bit more. Really depends on the dog and activity level.

| When Apple was on RX/id, she was getting 6 1/2 oz. a day (1/2 of a 13 oz. can) and I divided it up in three small meals...Apple only weighed a little over 5 lbs. @ that time...Now she's up to her fighting weight of 5 1/2 lbs...It seemed strange, to me, because she had been on primal raw, and only got 3 oz., total, a day, but I guess raw is nutrient/calorie dense... |
