| Would the raw eggshells be good for my yorkie? Dear YorkieTalk community piers, I'm reading an article at How To Train A Dog, dog training tips and techniques for home based dog trainers. In it the author advice to prepare raw food for dogs. One recipe includes eggs with shells. I have a question for you: Some years ago a veterinarian told me that eggs shells may injure dog's intestines. I would like to receive your valuable advice regarding this topic. |

| I would agree with the vet that said eggshells could hurt their intestines. I would imagine it could hurt their mouth, tongue and throat too. I would avoid eggshells. |

| Egg shells are a good source of calcium, but the process of turning them into a powder form isn't too appealing, especially when you can buy powdered bone meal in Vitamin stores.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I think they'd be fine on a large breed dog, but yorkies have tinier intestines. As Yorkiedaze stated, they do have lots of calcium, and you can't just leave them out of a recipe and keep it balanced without replacing them with some sort of safe calcium. I think we should always be concerned with safety first.

| They are a source of calcium. Nothing I'd want to be giving raw. They would also have to be ground really fine. A calcium supplement would probably be better. It has to be carefully balanced with phosphorus also.
