| Substitute for Perscription Food Hello Everyone, I have a little Yorkie who has diabetes and is on Hills WD. For the first time since he was diagnosed, I have run out of his food. We are in a panic not knowing what to feed him tonight and he must eat when he gets his insulin shot. He had severe pancreatitis from getting into one of our other dogs food which is how we found out about the diabetes. This was about 4 months ago and I am terrified to give him anything other than the WD because I don't want the same thing to happen. Before he got sick, he was able to eat hot dogs without getting an upset stomach but if he got into just about anything else........he was sick. I hope someone has a suggestion for me this evening........I can't believe I ran out of his food ! Thanks so much, Kayla and Mikki |

| Does your vet take after hours calls? I would be afraid to switch without talking to the vet. I am not sure you can get a comparable food. Some of the others may have more advice.

| Hello, Thanks for responding so quickly. No, my vet does not take after hour calls and neither does the Diabetes Specialist that we see. Also, believe it or not, sometimes chicken would upset his tummy but I think that happened when he already had the pancreatitis going on and we didn't know it. I'm going to call the emergency vet that we took him to when he first got sick. There was a wonderful Dr. there and maybe they can tell me what to do. If anyone else knows what I should do.......I'm open to all suggestions! Thanks so much, Kayla and Mikki |

| Steamed (plain) talapia is a good food for a pup with any type of digestive disorder - if you happen to have it on hand. You can simply give him that without need to worry about mixing it with something, especially if you're planning to get him right back on his original rx diet....

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | How about calling around to any emergency vet in your area to see if they carry it?

| The Pet Company sells the prescription diet in cans. Maybe you can call some pet stores to see if they carry it. Good Luck! |

| Maybe this will help. Diets For Diabetic Pets These diets rely on higher protein and lower carbohydrate to help stabilize blood glucose since the protein in food is converted to glucose slower than the starch. The results of increasing or decreasing fiber content in the diet of diabetic cats are not consistent. What is probably more important is that your cat stay at a normal body weight and consume its diet slowly throughout the day. Dogs seem to do better when their fiber intake is increased. A well-established routine that combines regularly scheduled meal times, treats, and exercise is very important in maintaining your diabetic pet's good health. Reducing your pet's weight to an optimal level is also very important. You do not want your diabetic pet to be too fat or too thin. You will need to experiment with various recipes and feeding times and see what works best to control your pet's blood sugar level. The best way to monitor your pet's blood sugar is using a glucometer at home to monitor its blood sugar level. In cats, you may get by using Glucotests. In people, dietary changes alone often make insulin therapy unnecessary. This can occur in pets as well. Commercially formulated diets for diabetic pets have increased omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid levels supplied by fish oils and flax seed and increased levels of vitamin E . Sunflower and canola oils are good sources of natural vitamin E. And this: Homemade Dog Food for Diabetes Control | eHow.com
