apple cider vinegar someone at the dog park told me about adding apple cider vinegar to the dog's drinking water. so i looked up some info. online about apple cider vinegar. sounds great. i already ordered a bottle, will try it on the doggies soon. :) (not sure if they'll like the taste:confused:) "Apple cider vinegar (in its natural form from a health food store, not the pasteurized version from the grocery store) is a natural antibiotic, antiseptic, and deodorant; helps digestion and to remove tooth tartar; prevents tooth decay and hair loss (even mange), prevents and heals gum disease and skin problems; and will discourage fleas." i also found the amt. you are supposed to add to their drinking water, but i need to find the link again. i will post that info. once i find the link. :D |
might also help clear up tear stains if your yorkie has tear stain problems, apple cider vinegar might also help. :) "You could continually wash away your dog's tear stains, but that affects only the result not the cause. Putting a teaspoon of natural apple cider vinegar per quart of water in your dog's water bowl can clear up most active yeast infections and prevent future infections. Apple cider vinegar tablets can be used if your dog refuses to drink the treated water. A dog's (and human's) system should be PH balanced (between acid and alkaline), and apple cider vinegar adds the acid that many of us are lacking." |

I actually used to add ACV to Tatum's water (for quite a while) but then got out of the habit. I'm sure the benefits were there but just not something I saw drastically so I drifted away from it. It was on this forum that I read about the measurements and such. Thanks for bringing it up again. |
ACV is great! There are so many benefits that have been attributed to it. (I just need to get in the habit of using it on a regular basis) |
This may be totally irrelevant, but I had a hamster one time that had blood in his urine, so I assume he had a UTI. Someone told me to put some apple cider vinegar in his water and when I did, it cleared up with in a couple days. I wonder if apple cider vinegar would have the same effect on dogs and help with their urinary tract too? |
 Great info, calling my local health food store for some and I'm going to start using it for Dud and Dex in their water!!!;) |
3 tablespoons to a qt. of water and use as a last rinse also keeps fleas off. Here is the ACV we use: Bragg Live Foods, Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar, Bragg Liquid Aminos,Systemic Enzymes, Bragg Live Organic Food Products, Patricia Bragg, Paul Bragg, Bragg Organic Olive Oil, Bragg Salad Dressings, Bragg Seasonings, Bragg Health Products |
Thanks for the info! I am going to try it! |
I used Apple Cider Vingear with Alex as part of our treatment for allergies and a bad yeast infection he had related to his allergies. It wasn't the only thing we used, but I definitely think it helped clear up his yeast infection. |
I am thinking I am wanting to try ACV tablets? Any thoughts on how much to give? I really am doubting Taycie will drink it in the water.. picky little twerp:) |

more info. on ACV Apple Cider Vinegar for Dogs - Is it Safe for Dogs? Apple cider vinegar, when used in appropriate amount, is safe for dogs with one exception - Dogs with a chronic yeast infection (Candida) or those with an overly acidic system or irritated intestines are not recommended. Vinegar is believed to reactivate or worsen these conditions. Other precautions when using ACV on your dog: Never give undiluted ACV to your dog. When using it as a rinse, take care not to let it get into your dog's eyes. Also, do not use ACV on open wounds such as cuts or scratches as it will burn. Apple Cider Vinegar for Dogs - Which ACV? Not all vinegars have the same benefits. Do not use a vinegar that is clear such as wine vinegar, sushi vinegar, etc. that can be found in most supermarkets. These types of vinegar are "dead" because they do not contain any enzymes and other live factors as found in unpasteurized ACV. The best ACV is one that is raw, unpasteurized, unheated, and organic. You can find organic ACV in health food stores. |
Apple Cider Vinegar for Dogs - Benefits of ACV for Dogs There are numerous health benefits of ACV for dogs. The main ones are: ACV is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal and it boosts the immune system. It improves stamina, increases resistance to diseases, prevents common infections, and is therefore helpful for dogs with weakened immune systems. ACV normalizes the blood's acid alkaline balance and its potassium-rich ingredients remineralize the body. ACV breaks down calcium deposits in a dog's joints and remineralizes the bones, and as such it is beneficial for dogs with arthritis and joint problems such as hip dysplasia. Another benefit of apple cider vinegar for dogs is its effect on a dog's skin and coat due to ACV's detoxifying properties. Dogs with itchy skin caused by allergies (e.g. flea allergies) can get almost instant relief if ACV is used as an after-shampoo rinse. Because ACV is rich in potassium, it is beneficial for dogs with diuretic or heart problems. Apple cider vinegar also balances digestive enyzymes in the body, so it is a good remedy for food poisoning and digestive upsets such as intestinal gas and constipation. It also reduces fecal odors. Other benefits of ACV include the prevention of bladder stones, kidney infections, and urinary tract infections. |
Apple Cider Vinegar for Dogs - Some Common Uses Apple cider vinegar can be used in various ways to treat dog health problems. Some common uses include: General Detoxifier Use ACV as a general detoxifier and a mild tonic. Long term use of ACV will make your dog more resistant to infections, as well as flea or worm infestations. Start by adding small amounts of ACV to your dog's drinking water and slowly building up to about 1 teaspoon of ACV per 15 pounds of body weight. Some dogs may not like the taste of vinegar in their water. If that's the case for your dog, mix ACV with his food, or mix it with a teaspoonful of raw honey. Rinse for Skin Problems Use ACV as an after-shampoo rinse if your dog has skin problems such as allergies, fleas, or ringworm. To make the vinegar rinse: Add 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to a quart of water. Use it once a week as an after-shampoo rinse. Remember not to rinse off the ACV - just towel your dog dry. Flea Repellent Spray You can also prepare a spray by simply using 50% apple cider vinegar and 50% water. Use a spray bottle and spray your dog's coat after his daily walks, and you can use it to spray his bedding as well. |
So I bought the bragg brand of ACV at Whole Foods. Does a Tsp a day added to her food sound like to much? She weighs 5.13 |
Hello just be careful I know that when I was on an apple cider vinegar diet I discovered that the acid that apple cider vinegar contains wears away the enamel on your teeth, as does any acidic food or drink. It is recommended that you drink the apple cider vinegar over a short period of time, instead of a long period of time. I used to drink it thru a straw and rinsed my mouth out afterwards. I am not sure how it would effect a dog's teeth but because they have so many dental issues I would be careful. |

I actually went to the Bragg website and she recommended to give a tsp for small dogs and a tbsp for medium to large dogs. Bragg Live Foods, Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar, Bragg Liquid Aminos,Systemic Enzymes, Bragg Live Organic Food Products, Patricia Bragg, Paul Bragg, Bragg Organic Olive Oil, Bragg Salad Dressings, Bragg Seasonings, Bragg Health Products I am going with a 1/4 tsp once a day. And have been since I started it. I can already see the difference in her! She has a VERY touchy tummy and her poop is the best it has ever been, her eyes seem less runny as well! I am thrilled already with the results. I don't think I will be upping the amount anytime soon. Since she has an ULTRA senstive stomach I actually think a tsp is too much. Also, If I can already see a difference I don't feel there is a need to mess with what is working. I also add it to her food rather then her water. On Bragg's website it was actually recommended to give it that way instead of adding it to their water, if they will tolerate it. I just mix it in with a little wet food since it is such a small amount and she doesn't even know its there:) |

i would love to add it to their food, how many drops should i put in each meal? would 2 or 3 drops be enough ? |
I didn't know any of this! Layla has really bad tear stains, and haaaates me trying to brush her teeth, so this would be great if it could help loosen some tarter and I could get brushing done a little more easily! |

I just bought a set of measuring cups and measuring spoons from the dollar store. I would even start with 1/8 of tsp and thats almost nothing, And work your way up. I like to know exactly how much they are getting so if for some reason I need to adjust it. |

What also helps me with tear stains, I actually saw this tip from someone else.. that their vet told them. I dip a cotton ball in warm water and put a TINY drop of Baby wash.. (I use Johnson and Johnson) and wipe the corner of her eyes out. Then I use another cotton ball that is just wet and wipe again to make sure it clean and all the soap is off.. I do this morning and night and her face is really starting to look up. |
I've never read about the benefits ACV can have on a dog -- thanks for the info! I definitely want to try this, especially if it helps with tear stains. |
Since my last post, I mixed 1 tsp ACV to 1 qt of water, i fill their small water bowls up every day with it, I keep the bottle in the fridge, I'm doing this every 3 days...Glad I read this :D Didn't think of adding it to their food directly, could be bitter??? |
wow... thank you all for the great information! I am ordering today and will start asap. I have a white shih tuz who has terrible tear stains. I have been using bottled filter water and that help but they are still there. Also he has itchy skin and I have adjusted his diet and shampoo and added omega 3 -- improvment but I still hope to help them some more. Thanks so much!!!!!:yorkietal |
