| Hard time pooping after spay Tinkerbell is having a hard time pooping. She has tried twice since coming home today and both times she squealed in pain and stopped. Is there something I should be gving her to soften her stool? The vet didn't mention this at all. I will be giving him a call in the morning, but I thought maybe someone had experience with this and their girls. THANKS. |

| I just read a few threads down that canned pumpkin will work as a stool softner. How much should I give her? |

| A teaspoon or two should help. Are you sure she's eaten enough to need to go? I thought she was just spayed. Good luck! I guess I missed your middle part of the post stating she's tried upon the first read. Sorry!

| Here is the amount someone stated to use: Yes, canned pumpkin works for constipation. I just had to use it yesterday on Lily. It takes about 30 min to 1 hour to work. I use the rule of 1 teaspoon per pound. They aren't too crazy about it so you may need to mix it in with some wet food or use a syringe. Make sure you use pure pumpkin without added sugar. Be careful how much you give or it will result in diarhea

| i would imagine it does hurt them plenty whether the stool is too firm or not. canned pumpkin does help to regulate the stool to a normal consistency whether they are constipated or diarrhea. it won't hurt to try it. but she may still hurt no matter what if her spay sight is still painful. is she on paid meds since leaving the vet? |

| The vet sent her home with metcam, but she already had her dose for today and the instructions say only 1 dose per day. She has eaten twice since coming home. The vet tch told me she wouldn't eat for them so she was pretty hungry when we got home. I just gave her a little dinner around 7 becuase she was acting hungry again. I just sent my dh out to get some canned pumpkin. Thanks for the dosage amount. I am going to give it a try. Poor baby. I know just how she feels. I remember how hard it was to go after having my skin kids. |

| Green beans also are a very good source of fiber and I have found them to work better then the pumpkin, especially after surgeries. |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | It's pretty common to get bowel irregularities after any kind of abdominal surgery. Any time someone starts pushing and pulling on the intestines the normal peristalsis gets thrown off. Sometimes you get diarrhea, other times constipation. Pain medications can make it worse. Plus the actual incision just flat out makes it hurt. In addition to the pumpkin or green beans, make sure she's drinking lots of water to help keep everything soft.
