| Food/Diet help for little one I have a 2year old 4lb yorkie. I also have a 70lb golden retriever, the golden is on Taste of the Wild, salmon dry food due to skin issues. Vet advised yorkie could eat same as golden so they have been on same food for about a year. Besides the killer bad breath I have noticed that yorkie has to bite his food to make it smaller and has almost chocked a few times. I was wondering if anyone has any info on any of the small bites for Yorkie breeds..ie, Eukanuba, Royal Candida. Thinking of switching him but wanted to do a little research. Any suggestions?? |

| TOTW is not all that large of a kibble, I'm surprised your little one can't eat it. Lots of 5lb and under Yorkies eat Acana and Orijen on here which is bigger than TOTW. I do know one member uses a nutcracker to make the kibble smaller (our spoiled dogs around here! ) I wouldn't personally recommend foods like Eukanuba and Royal Canin, as I find TOTW to be far superior to them, so it would kind of be a "downgrade", IMO. The dog food brand Fromm has really small kibble! Atleast the "Surf and Turf" variety did. Wellness has a small bites formula as well.

| Since you mention bad breath and him having problems chewing the kibble, have you had his teeth checked? I've fed quite a bit of TOTW Pacific Stream and my little ones never had problems eating it or with bad breath.

| Yep, I'm with Bonny and Britster. I feed TOTW and my smallest is under 4 lbs and very fine boned. He has no trouble cracking it into little pieces. Rather than go through the hassle of switching foods, why not just crush it a bit for him? Put it in a baggie and use a rolling pin or something heavy just to break up the pieces into smaller bits. And if you are not doing any daily/weekly dental brushing, now is a good time to start. I use Petzlife Oral Gel (you can get spray too). This stuff I swear is a miracle worker for tartar. In a few days, the tartar is gone! Good luck!

| Mickey (5 lb) and Max (7.5 lb) bothe eat Wellness Small Breed Adult right now but are getting ready to rotate again back to Acana Grass Lands for variety. They do not have any problems with the food except that Mickey deos not chew it. Not sure why he swallows it whole.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Morgan is 5lbs and she eats the fishy taste of the wild too with no problems. She does crunch it up more then the small breed food but then again she crunches cheerios too LOL

| Levi is 5 lbs and eats Orijen without problems. The kibble pieces are large, but he just chews them thoroughly. We tried an Artemis Small Breed sample once, and the kibble was TINY...too tiny. He swallowed those pieces whole, which made me kind of uncomfortable.

| Thanks !! I had not thought about breaking it up..duh. I will try that. His teeth are fine just had a check up and vet checked them out because I complained about his breath. He isn't having trouble chewing TOTW per say, he just breaks it up on his own and I have noticed him chock on a few ocassions. He really enjoys it. Thanks for the Petzlife oral gel suggestion. I will look for it and try that...Can't believe one little mouth can smell so yucky... |
