| 9 Week old baby... Not sure what to do! :( Hi all, my little 9 week old Yorkie is having some issues. We got her last week and she was doing OK but the last 4 days she has had bad diarrhea. We feel SO bad for her. She will wait and not eat all day, then she will eat and we feel good, but then she will have such a hard time going poo. At first we were trying to potty train her but now we just feel so bad for her that anytime she actually goes we will try and support her and make her feel good about it. The bad thing is, it is always liquidy. And she tries so hard to go but not much comes out. It is going on 4 days of this. Should we be scared? My wife and I plan to take her to the Vet tomorrow. Any advice? Please... To make matters worse, today when she was playing she must have hurt her leg. She is limping and it breaks my heart. She doesnt seem to be in any pain, but it is very noticable that she is hurting by the way she walks and how she favors her other leg. I apologize for all the questions, but we are new parents and we love her SO much. Any advice is helpful. thank you all so much... |

| Not much help, but what are you feeding her? I've heard others say boiled chicken w/rice is easy on tummy. She really needs to have something in her belly during the day at her age. Probably wouldn't hurt to try & keep her from being active as possible w/the leg. At least until a vet can look at it. Hopefully someone w/more knowledge will responed. |

| thanks for the reply. I am thinking of trying something like that. This morning was awful with her eating, she just starred at the food and my wife and I were going to work so we needed to see her eat to feel comfortable. So I took a small piece of ham cold cut and put it in with her food and she freaked out with excitement. she ate a good portion of her "dog food" (befifull puppy chow) with the ham, but she is in love with that ham. I didnt want to do that, but I feel desperate sometimes to get her to eat. As for the leg, I am thankful she isnt crying or yelping, but the limping makes me want to cry... |

| Also, I hate to add another one but I really am concerned about this as well. Is it normal for a little puppy to seem depressed at times? She is so cute and loving but at time she just seems so down. Is this normal at her age? |

| You need to get her to the vet, They can dehydrate in a hurry. She may have giardia. |

Canned pumpkin is good for diahrrea. Cooked rice and boiled chicken are good. I would not feed her ham, too much salt.

She needs to be seen by a vet 4 days of having trouble pooping and being depressed. Your puppy can go down so quickly and die being only 9 weeks old. Benefil is not a good food, is this the food she was on when you got her? Or did you switch. If you didn't switch over slowly it could be affecting her. As well as ham, is too fattening. It can make her even more sick.

| Great tip on the canned pumpkin. Please make sure it's plain pumpkin and not PIE filling pumpkin.

| Make sure you know where the ER is and have their number on hand. If her gums are anything but pink, take her in. If they are not wet, she may be dehydrating and that is also an emergency. Just so you know for next time, four days is way too long for a Yorkie pup to go with diarrhea. It is dehydrating and can potentially lead to death. So, keep the ER number and directions handy and take her to a vet first thing in the morning. Depression can accompany the common diarrhea-causing problems. The leg does need to be looked at (can you tell if her knee is bothering her?), but I'd be more worried about the other problem tonight. Ham can trigger pancreatitis and should never be given to Yorkies. Canned food will entice her to eat, but it can also cause loose stool, so be careful. The vet may give you some food to use for a few days or you could give chicken and rice.

| She REALLY needs to see a vet. Make sure she sees one ASAP. Your pup is very young and could go downhill fast. The canned pumpkin can help with the diarrhea. Make sure she's getting plenty of water as she could dehydrate. She may be a bit lethargic due to not feeling well but it is also a sign of blood sugar dropping. Since she's not eatng well, it likely could be low blood sugar. You can give her some Nutri-cal or some Karo syrup to help bring her sugar levels up and prevent a hypoglycemic episode. It may help to stimulate her appetite, too. None of this takes the place of her seeing the vet, but are some things you could do now. You could try getting her to eat some boiled chicken or a scrambled egg or some canned pupy food just to get something in her. The nutri-cal or karo will bring her sugar levels up but needs to be follwed by some protein. Keep a close eye on her and don't hesitate to go to the emergency vet if needed before tomorrow.

| I pray you didn't leave her at home by herself today. Never leave a little sick yorkie home alone. As advised, she needs to see a vet ASAP. When I first got my rescued yorkie, I gave her canned turkey "wellness" w/boiled egg white. But only for a few days until she got better. Now she just has the wellness dog food. Don't forget the nutical followed w/protein every couple hours. How is she doing? |
