My bella is 11mths i have read that the nipples get swollen or hard and that their privates get really swollen. is there any other symptoms i should know about? also how long does it last? also if there's any bleeding what do you do so she wont bleed all over the house?

My girls get the swollen nipples, swollen vulva, seem to want their own space, and also lick themselves constantly around their vulva trying to clean themselves up.
The average heat is 21 days but it can vary by dog more or less.
I use doggy diapers both washable and disposable. You could also buy some huggies and cut a hole out for the tail. There are washable doggy diapers on Ebay too that you could look into as well.
You may or may not notice any bleeding. One of girls is so clean about it that I hardly saw any bleeding. Another one on the hand decided to start her heat on my down comforter and isn't an exceissive licker! There was no mistaking that one. I know TMI.

I too have questions about first heat. My little girl just went through it with no issues although her vulva got quite dark (black). The vet said that is from all the licking and nothing to worry about. Now, however, after the heat, her nipples have hard cyst like lumps under them. I remember being quite cysty as a young girl when I started to "develop". Is this the same thing? Or is it something abnormal?

Its her first time as well and like everyone said, her privates are swollen. You will notice - its getting VERY big. There is another way to detect when she is "due" and its by other dogs sniffing her privates more than usual. Even females. My neighbor's dog "alerted" me a week before it started

It's normal...it may take a couple of weeks but those lumps will go back down
