| My dog eats fecal matter-Help?! My adorable little guy, Rocco, for the first time this evening has eaten his own poop twice. I took him out like I usually do, always stay with him, noticed him to be chewing on something. At first I didn't find this too unusual, he eats grass occassionally. But then I notice it had to be more than grass turning out to be dried stool. (We clean up daily but must have missed some.) I told him to stop he took off towards the house I cleaned up left over stool turned to see he had a large piece hanging from his mouth chewing it - I told him to drop it , not wanting to grab it. Once in house cleaned his face brushed teeth(which he is not a fan of yet). So disgusting. Why? |

| Very common. It's called coprophagia. There is really only one medical problem that causes it, EPI. This is usually not the cause though. It's a behavior issue. There are things you can add to his food to discourage it like pineapple, meat tenderizer, or a product made for it.

| This is an unfortunate thing about dogs. Yuk -I know! I believe they do it because they don't fully digest their dog food. This stopped for us when we switched to a homemade raw diet. It hasn't been an issue since - thank goodness!!!

| response to coprophagia Thank you so much for the info. I just have a couple of quesions please. What is EPI? I have heard of the pinapple , however he has stress colitis and am always concerned with not wanting to cause a disrupt in regards to nutrition. You mentioned it is most commonly a result of behavior , he has been very clingy(following me around) nipping for attention( which we are addressing). I was off work sick for a week and home with him now went back to work yesterday and thought that was the reason. What are your thoughts? |

| I had a lady tell me to give a little bit of A1 sauce. Just a little bit that they can lick off your finger. I don't know if that is ok to do or not but she swears by it. Any one know if that is ok to do? |

| I did try it and it did work. She has not eaten hers since then. (thank God!) She really liked it too. I don't think there is anything in it that would hurt them?! |

| We had issues with Harley eating his... as soon as I switched to a grain free and corn free food he stopped, if I accidentally give him a treat with grain in it, he goes back to eating while it goes through his system... |

| EPI is exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. It is definitely not the likely cause of coprophagia in Yorkies. Behavioral (just a habit or it tastes good to him) is the most likely cause. Couldn't say what sets is off though... Because he has stress colitis, the vet should tell you what to use. They can even prescribe something.
