| new mom worries Tink had her first vet appt. this past Monday and did really good. She is 13 wks and weighs 2.6 pounds. My vet said she was super healthy and that she was a good weight for her size. I just can't get used to how little she eats. Most days she eats about 3 tablespoons divided into 3 meals. I leave about a 1/2 cup of dry kibble out 24/7, but she only eats a tiny bit of this. Should I be giving her karyo syrup or nutrical? She does seem to sleep alot, what is a normal amount of sleep? I would like to switch her over to a raw diet based on the research I have been doing. Does anyone think that would be a problem for her? Everything I have read has said puppies can be started right away with a raw diet. Thanks for listening and helping out a new mom. |

| As long as she is growing and gaining weight, she is eating enough. I like to give mine nautical after she plays, just to be safe. As for the sleep she is still very young and will need a lot of sleep for a while. Mine is over a year and she still sleeps a lot. |

| Little ones can be real picky with food. My girl Zoey was about the same size as your Tink at 13 weeks. She's about 3.5 lbs now at 6.5 months. At times Zoey will not eat much at all and sometimes even only 1x/day and only a little bit. At other times she'll eat more and gobble down her food. She was always this way too. However, she's very healthy and since I've got her at 12 weeks of age has gained a healthy amount of weight - to much of my surprise. It really depends on what I'm feeding how much Zoey will eat. I'm still having trouble finding a food she'll consistently eat and I've tried everything. Kibble she hardly touches (tried a dozen brands) - it's always been this way with Kibble for Zoey. Wet food - she picks at, but isn't fond of. Raw, I've only tried Natures Variety, which Zoey didn't touch at all. Home-cooked worked well for a while, but now Zoey won't touch boiled chicken and everything I use to cook for her and she's really picky and doesn't like much. She only goes crazy over steak at this point - go figure. I'd definitely try raw. I've only heard positive things about raw and the pre-made raw IMO is very convenient and easy to prepare - keeps you and your dog on a good schedule too. I plan on trying Primal and/or Stella and Chewy's to see if either works on Zoey because I'd prefer to feed her raw over everything else and I'm getting tired of frying up steaks for her (not the best for her either). A mistake I made IMO was free feeding Zoey when she was younger and leaving down kibble 24/7. I was afraid and scared she wasn't eating when I just put food down for her and leaving it down gave her the option to eat when she wanted and this way Zoey was at least eating I thought. However, it made potty training difficult because Zoey would eat whenever she felt like it (mostly at night) and I couldn't time when she needed to "go", so for walks I scheduled during the day she didn't need to "go". Also, when I noticed she didn't touch much of her kibble I started giving in and feeding/trying many different foods and kibble brands to try and get her to eat and I think that may have contributed to her being so picky.I was worried she wasn't eating enough when really it doesn't take much to fill these little one's bellies. I read one should leave food out for only 20 minutes and if your dog doesn't touch it to remove it and try again later. Eventually most of the times they will eat what you put down for them otherwise always mixing up things and trying everything can lead to having a real picky eater on one's hands, which I have now! The Nutrical is good and important to have on hand for a little one in-case their blood sugar drops, but should not substitute a "feeding" and only given when one becomes lethargic. How much does your baby sleep? Little one do sleep a-lot when they are young. My Zoey I think was an exception - she's a perky one doesn't need much sleep at all and never has! She keeps me up late at night and is also my new alarm clock.

| Thank you! Your posts have been so helpful. My little Tinerbell sounds so much like your Zoey, Melcakes. She eats very little of the dry kibble so at least twice a day I offer her a heaping tablespoon of wet food which sometimes she eats and other times she doesn't. Some days I have actually fed her little bites from my fingers and this has worked. I am definitely going to try the raw diet once I locate a supplier. I think I am going to stop leaving the dry kibble out once I switch her over to the raw. Your comments on the house training make so much sense to me. Iy hhas been 14 years since I have had a puppy to raise and I am definitely a little rusty. Tink seems to need frequent naps throughout the day. I took her to work with me on Friday and she slept off an on all day. I thought I wasn't going to get much work done with her there, but she surprised me. Thanks so much for your advice. It has reassured me quite a bit. |
