| Cast is off... Advice? Hello, Our 7-month-old yorkie had 3 broken meta-tarsals (that's a horrible story), but the vet was able to splint his foot (instead of pins), which included a cast on his entire front leg. Has wore that cast for a month, and had it removed today. We are afraid that he has some atrophy in his leg, and might be susceptible to other injuries and breaks. Does anyone have any advice on how long it will take for him to regain the strength in that leg or whether his risk for re-injury (of his foot or his leg) is increased? Any advice would be great! Thanks so much! Heidi |

| Hey I know this might sound crazy- but does your yorkie like to swim? My 2 babies have never had a caste but they do have the patella that occasionally slips. My vet recommended swimming or walking up a hilly area. In the summer my 2 babies are the first ones to jump in our pool. There are pet therapy places around, too. I guess they are just catching on in our area. Keep an eye on your little one. We'll be thinking about you! The only thing better than owning 1 yorlie is owning 2 yorkies!! |

| My Jack Russell had a broken leg when he was a puppy and when the cast came off, he limped pretty bad, but the vet said he would and that it would get better, it did. The leg was atrophied, and it took a few weeks to get the muscle tone back, but it did come back. I will say that he favored that leg in that when he would raise up on his hind legs and rest his front paws on something like my husband's lazy boy chair, he would always lean/rest only on the other (not broken) leg and never would rest/lean on the one that had been broken. He always just let it hang. However, he was EXTREMELY active and he never limped or anything on the leg that was broken (after he got over the inital limping when the cast first came off). Usually, the broken area is stronger than before because the healing causes the bone to be thicker at that spot. It will take him a few days to get used to having the cast off - he may not even walk on the leg for a few days, but eventually he will. If he doesn't, then back to the vet, pronto!

| Welcome to YT. WE will love to see pics of your little one. Im happy that he has his cast off and doing well. I dont know the answer but I think as long he does uses the legs, he will be fine. I agreed with the swimming; i seen also swimming therapy for dogs. Maybe you can look into that. Please keep us posted how he improves. |
