Thor's Human Donating Member | Can dogs get the hiccups? Thor started coughing/gagging today, and it went on for about twenty minutes. Every 30 seconds or so, he'd make this weird noise, and I could see his stomach contracting. It sounded like a cough, but the stomach movement looked like he might be trying to vomit. I sat with him for a few minutes and it stopped, which make me think it might be hiccups?

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I had to do a google on that, but yes they can, according to the sources I read, here's one article. What Causes Hiccups in Dogs They are attributed to all sorts of things, including nervousness. One site said if your dog gets them often, you might want to check for an underlying problem. Hope he's all better now!

Thor's Human Donating Member | Thanks! This is the first time I've seen it. It was a few hours ago. Thor is such a Nervous Nelly. Over the past few months, he's developed a habit of sneezing when he gets excited. So now sneezes are going in and out in both directions. Weirdo.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I lay Joey on his back when I'm grooming his paws, and one time a little bit of hair fell in his face, and he sneezed. Now, every time I lay him on his back he sneezes. I got a cute little weirdo too.

| Uni sneezes when she's pissed. And she makes the sneeze with a "ffff!" sound, like she's saying ffff! you! It's really funny. She does it when she wants attention and I am purposely ignoring her. She does it instead of barking. If I still don't acknowledge her then the non stop barking begins. As far as hiccups, yup she gets those too, but not to often, but it is cute. I try to get her to drink water and it helps.

| hmm, mine get the the hiccups every so often. Especially when they sleep. Their whole little bodies rhythmically jerk, it is really cute. I never thought that it could be symptomatic of something wrong...

| Hot rod just had the hiccups the other night. I can't say I've really ever noticed them having them before.

| Roxie had the hiccups for the first time (that I've seen) the other day. I was like, "what the heck?". It was sort of funny. It didn't last too long, just a few minutes.

| Huh...Chloe used to have hiccups pretty frequently as a puppy. By frequently, I mean more than once a month but less than once a week. (I didn't keep an accurate count of occurrences! ) I would feel SOOOO sorry for her because I myself HATE having the hiccups and she would just look so helpless. So I would usually wrestle with her or chase her around the room, anything to get her active and they always went away quickly. Since I can't explain to her to hold her breath, I had to find another solution. She's over a year old now and I don't think she's had a case in probably five or six months. -C

| Addie had the hiccups as a puppy, but she's grown out of it (mostly). I would lay her on her back and rub her tummy when they started and it seemed to help. But, yeah, I freaked out when it first happened and wanted to run her to the emergency vet. DH looked online and said it shouldn't be a problem. At her next vet visit, the vet confirmed it wasn't an issue.
